There's these two different gentlemen who, for whatever reason I just cannot understand, come to me to check them out at the Uscan. The first guy seems to buy a lot of sodas for his shop. The second guy, just buys a who cart of groceries for his family. Both of them, for whatever reason come directly to me to check them out at the Uscan. I've asked them, why don't you just go to a regular lane and have the cashier check you out. And their response was along the lines of "but I trust you."
The second guy gave me a $5 tip for checking him out the other day.
What you describe isn't too, too uncommon. It would happen to me and some others from time to time when I worked on the front end. Some customers have their preferences when it comes to employees. It happens in produce, bakery and meat/seafood, too, at my current store. The bottom line is, some employees are just better at giving customer service, and frankly, care more, than others do, and some customers pick up on this.
I honestly wouldn't even question it; I'd just think of it as a compliment and let that make your day a little better.

One customer that comes to my Uscan, sometimes, has me help him scan his stuff and swipe his card. It's always a couple items, no big deal. I suspect he has dyslexia or something, cause he can never figure out which buttons to push and how to use the pinpad, even though he's shopped here many many times. And every time I help him, he always jokes and says stuff like "man, why haven't they made you a manager yet, you've got the smarts to make this stuff work. man, next time I come here and you're not a manager, I'm gonna complain to the corporate office."
