How'd your shift at work start today?

Bit of background: It's Saturday at Kroger. And you know what that means? Busy as all hell and as per usual more peeps on during the day with very limited slicers. And of course we have a line forming of customers not really caring about the grab and go as per usual. And also was teamed up with a few co-workers, that for a better word, seem kind of blind to things around them unless it's pointed out(I'm one of them at times, so not like I'm just saying it from a superiority place).

Situation: I was cutting up some more cheese for the grab and go and trying to stay out of my co-workers way as they were working on the folks at the counter. Well after the initial few folks leave, some folks are bagging up all the opened meats. Cleaning a few slicers and making up some bags of the Kroger brand trios we sale in the grab and go as well.

So naturally, I'm looking down focusing on the cheese I'm working on. And just happen to look up every so often to see more customers coming to the counter. Now naturally I've peeped them out before someone else does. And honestly feeling tempted to go over to the counter and get to helping out right away. But seeing as how busy it was during the last rush, and how other folks on the floor managed to mob the day lights out of the grab and go. I figured I would just keep working on what I could, so we wouldn't have holes over there and have the managers on our butts about it. So, I ask the nearest co-worker next to me if she could help the customer that had just come up(as clearly she is head deep in cleaning slicers and not really paying much attention at all).

To which she does, and there after a few more come up and the others working on bagging up the meats eventually start helping other customers too. Well once they are all occupied again, even more folks start coming up. So I stop my cheese cutting and help out a few customers as well. Until I get to this one dude that just wanted a simple half a pound of the turkey. So I'm like cool that won't take long and grab the nearest meat slicer that was open at my disposal. Well apparently this female customer gets up in her feelings, when she sees one of our new girls coming back to the slicer I'm on and is like "hey you took that from her. She was helping me, etc. etc." To which I told the new girl and NOT the customer that I would be just a second as the guy just needed a quick half a pound.

But the whole time the female customer was throwing me dirty looks and crap cause I was using the slicer. Thankfully I held my tongue and didn't lip off back to her. But I was sorely tempted to tell her that is just how it works at our store. That if there is an available slicer and there is a bunch of people needing assistance, you jump on it as quick as you can to get people through the line. Be a different story if my co-worker had grabbed all the stuff she needed and was like "nope" I'm still working on this one. And I'd be like cool I can wait. Cause as is I had to jump down to the sub shop's slicer and use that twice for 2 other customers. But as it doesn't have a scale on the machine and you have to come back to the deli section to get a sticker and all of that. I figured, I wouldn't do that for the current guy I was working on. When we already had a nearby slicer available already.

So yea, that is how my shift started out and makes me all the more thankful that I don't have to work tomorrow. So not here for a Sunday rush.

Speaking of slicers and it being Saturday. We have 2 meat slicers and 1 cheese slicer. Yesterday we were packed with customers and people are using all slicers, They want me to come help. One person walked away from their slicer and I started slicing on it. I got the meanest look ever. Don't ask me to help serve customers if I'm going to get mean mugged while serving them. I wiped out 3 customers in the time it took for 1 person to take care of 1 customer. Because that person was literally slicing one slice per 2 seconds.

Oh man. I don't think we could make it on just 3 slicers. We have 2 cheese and 3-ish for meat(I say ish, cause the sub shop has one and we do have a spare one in the back on one of the tables where we have chicken shop). But definitely shows the differences in stores for sure.

And sorry you had to deal with some dirty looks as well. Most especially when they asked for your help in the first place. That is ALWAYS annoying as hell.

The company needs to completely redesign the Deli Counter setup. How many store have Deli Kiosks? Why are the Deli Kiosks, Deli Ticket Machines and Grab and Go.....not right next to each other.

How many people order exactly wants in the Grab and Go, but wait with a #?
How many people would order at the Kiosk if they see a line at the deli before taking a ticket?
What would happen if the redesigned the Kiosk so a Deli Associate takes order and the customer come back after 15 mins?

I heard of new technology to eliminate Deli Customer Tickets!? Why are we making things more complicated then they are really worth?

I didn't even know there was such a thing a deli tickets or even a kiosk. O_O It would be great though if we could filter through people at times and be like for those that want X,Y, and Z that is already in the grab and go form a line here, everybody else this is the cheese line and this is the meat line. Heck even maybe a line for just picking up orders too.
