why do you have to maintain hours to keep insurance?

I pay $12 per week regardless of how many hours I work, so why should I have to maintain 20 hours to keep insurance?  I'm going to school full time and don't want to work 20 hours.  I wound up declining insurance through kroger because school insurance costs about the same and I don't have to maintain a certain number of hours (at school) to keep it.  If we're paying for something we shouldn't have to maintain.  On the same token, if we don't have enough hours in a given month (say 20 in my case), they should refund us the $$ that we paid during the month.  It doesn't make sense to pay for something and not be able to use it.

Just another way kroger is taking from us.  They don't want us to get wise and look for a way out!

Insurance is a perk for employment, its not a guarantee because you decide to barely work a little. While you may pay $12.00 a pay period, do you know how much is paid besides that to actually provide you insurance? School insurance is great, but I'm sure it does not cover a lot of different medial items, College Students are seen as a health demographic so cheaper to insure. Also, if your insurance is dropped, you will not be paying the $12.00.

OH....There is always a way out, Its called the door. I think people forget companies are in business to make money and balance everything else to max. profit. If you don't understand the cut throat nature of retail/business, try apply for a job somewhere else and see what they offer you if you even get a interview.

way to side with kroger there buddy.  You've clearly never had to try to balance work and school (and a personal life).  If I work the 20 hours necessary for insurance, my grades suffer.  School > kroger.  What I'm saying is they need to make it a little more user friendly.  People on older contracts don't have to maintain as many hours to keep their insurance.  Guess it's just another way my generation has been screwed over by the baby boomers.

Well actually, in my Division part times have to average 20 hours to keep insurance, FT people have to average 30 hours.  I worked FT and went to school, so I kinda know what your talking about.  The problem is every generation thinks they are the 1st to have to deal with school/job/life balance, its called the right of passage.  You will learn, you always have a choice in every situation.  I'm not for the company, but I'm one that looks at both sides of the equation.  Would you want to pay for health insurance for someone that works 10 hours a week? Paying 4k in benefits to someone that is barely working?  Keeping 20 hours a week is easy, if your a dependable employee most managers will allow you some freedom in your shifts.  You could work 2x10 hours shifts, work 2x8 hours shifts on the weekend and work 4-5 hours on a weekday. You would just work 4x5 hour shifts, while school is important, i highly bet your not studying 5 hours a day for class.  If I anyone coming out of HS was smart, trade school or apprentice programs would be the best option......high paying, in demand jobs, without having to go to college.  You ever call a plumber or electrician, 30 mins of work = $200 bill.

If you cant average 20 hours a week, I'm not sure that youre trying very hard. A part time job and full time school is absolutely possible. I know that probably isnt what you wanted to hear, and I feel you on getting screwed over by baby boomers, but this is just not one of those cases.
