I thought if you don't take a vacation, you lose it?

I don't really want to get into the details as to why I didn't take my second vacation last year, but some of my co-workers told me if I didn't take it, I'd just lose it and Kroger wouldn't pay me for it. While I wasn't thrilled about that, I had accepted that to be the case. Well, recently my vacation time reset in ExpressHR, so I again have my two weeks/80 hours vacation time... and to my surprise, to the right of Vacation Carried Fwd is 40 for both Time Available/Time Remaining. I'm just going to have to ask maybe the office ASP or maybe the co-manager over HR the next time I work if that means I actually have three weeks/120 hours of vacation time for this year, and if not, why Vacation Carried Fwd is even shown if it doesn't work that way.

Just curious if anyone has any thoughts on this. I'm in the Southwest Division, by the way.

 I'm in Southwest division too. And I always was told vacation would be lost, but my coworker didn't use theirs, and theirs carried forward as well, so I guess you have more vacation time this year. Congrats.

Some contracts give you until the end of January to use it. 

When I get my vacation request form, I am also given a request form to be paid for vacation without taking it.

I lost personal days one year.  Won't do that again.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll see if I can get a definite answer from someone in the know about whether or not I only have to the end of January to use the vacation time that seems to have carried over.

 The Kroger fiscal year consists of thirteen 4 week periods starting in February and ending in January.  You have until the end of this period to take your last vacation.  Otherwise, they'll just pay it out.  If they don't pay you for it, they're violating the contract.

i heard that they weren't paying out unused vacations, but i made sure to take mine before the end of January. So now i'm taking vacation this week that i was originally taking in September. But i'd rather take it than just get it paid out anyway.

Quick question. If say you have two weeks or more of vacation, do you have to take both or all the weeks together? Or can you spread them out throughout the year? Was always curioius as to how that worked.

You can take them separate.

Or, back to back depending on who else is trying to take a vacation those weeks.
