Cutting Hours

So, I called in last night, and spoke to my store manager.  While I'm on the phone with him, he keeps on insisting that I come in.  I keep on telling him, no, I'm not coming in, and how I'm calling in.  He then says how I call in at least once a week.  Okay, I probably call in once in every two weeks because I'm sore as ****.  We've been a skeleton crew for the last six months, so we've all been constantly working 12 - 14 hour days giving me fat paychecks, but my coworkers and I are drained from it.  He then proceeds to tell me how he's going to have to hire more people and how he's going to have to cut my hours.  WTF?  This is some bull**** punishment.  He obviously doesn't care about how working 5-6 days in a row without getting off at your scheduled time, really takes a toll on people.  I'm so tired of working for Kroger.  It's as if they only need you when they need you, and then they turn around and toss you into the garbage can.  We've gone through so many people since I've been working there, and besides me, there's only two other people whom stuck around.  I bust my ass to get the job done, and then my store manager turns around and threatens to cut my hours.  Are managers allowed to do this?  It's definitely not fair.  I've sweated and cried so much over this job because of the level of stress that comes with it, and this is how I get treated.  My coworkers and I are so unappreciated that it's so unreal.

Also, I wonder if I were to transfer to another store, if it would be as bad as mine?I'm not even sure if I want to, but I'm topped out at my pay since I was hired at thid rate, and in my department hasn't had a lead for over a month now.  I applied for the position, but then realized how I don't know Anything about my job since the biggest thing is using the rf gun and was never trained on how to scan up until a few weeks ago.  So, I'm left with no incentive anyway.

I mean, I'm left with no incentive because it seems like my store manager doesn't even want to help me get into a different position with more pay than what I'm getting now.  Doesn't make sense for me to keep working at the same pay rate without ever getting a raise again.  Not sure if I'd get one once a year for cost of living or I'd this is for union members only.

Yes managers are allowed to do that. If you're non-union, you don't have much of a back-up plan and they can fire you for missing all those days (with no notice). If you're calling in atleast once every 2 weeks that's a lot of days missed (13 a year). You are lucky you still have a job to go to.

I am confused.

Is your store unionized?  In most states, you are protected by the union even if you didn't join.  The union won't fight as hard for you but the store has to conform to the

union contract for everyone in the store.  Most contracts guarantee 40 hours for full time(not all contracts tho).  You can't be forced to work 6 days under my contract.

You make it sound like you have been there a long time if you are at top pay.

I have worked over 30 days straight at 12 hours a day several times in a year.  Yes, it is a relief to finally get a day off.  I have enough people on night crew now that I can actually take 2 days off a week.

It only hurts your co workers when you call in.  You should have reached the suspended and pending termination level of write-ups if you call in that often.

The store managers can call cashiers and other department clerks in to stock shelves during the day if it is an emergency situation.  The managers can also ask for volunteers around the district.

In my area there are no unions.  When freight is left because my coworkers and I've had enough, it doesn't get done even though the store manager says it will.  We come in for our shift that evening, and it's still sitting in our back room.  They over exhaust us.  I realize how it affects my coworkers, but they too understand how labor intensive our jobs are and how it hurts us a great deal physically.  I'm not the only one who calls in.  I've never had a write up either.  I've been working there for six months, and yes, they hired me at my top out pay.

Good for you for having stability.  Our turnover rate here though, is so terrible.  Everyone wonders why people quit, and it's because they're forced to work 14hrs on their very first day.  I don't blame anyone for calling in and quitting.  I see it like this, Kroger is lucky to have me and my fellow coworkers whom stuck around no matter how often we call in because we are still more reliable than most people.  I couldn't imagine working thirty days in a row at 12 hours.  I would definitely have to quit.

And I'm part time.  Anyway, I just looked at my schedule for next week, and I have 3 days off in a row.  This is a huge relief.  We also just hired two people, so I'm guessing this is why.

Yup, newbies come and go.  Either they like the job or they don't.

I have two people that reached the suspension level and can't call in for the next 60 days or they won't be employed any longer.

I had one person transfer to another department.  And, I have two new people that started two weeks ago.

I have more than enough people to get the job done but not enough with a sense of urgency.

U average a call-in every 2 weeks. Then get angry when your hours may be cut, even though u currently aren't working all the hours available to u anyway. Then are relieved to see that u have 3 days off next week. U are truly an enigma, a walking contradiction...

Well, I wouldn't worry about it. If your calling in is such an issue, then hire more people or write you up! If they hire more people, which is highly unlikely since they cant hire anyone.

OP, I understand that you are worn out. Those are long days. But as hard as it is on you, just think about how hard it is on your coworkers that are left to do their and YOUR job. They are same worn out as you are. It's not really fair for you to be calling out at all, just because you are sore. Take 2 advils, it helps.

Think about the fat checks you are getting. Count your lucky stars that you get all that overtime. As hard as it may be, you are making some good money that many of us are not. We still have same amount of work because most of us is also understaffed and our hours are cut. So we work same hard as you, without a benefit of overtime pay, or even a full time pay.
