I want to understand more about EBT. Why would a customer complain about the price of an item (couple dollars difference), when they're going to be paying with EBT? Isn't it free money from the government? Especially when I saw they had like $500 left on their balance.

Because it's our job to have accurate prices for the customers to see. EBT has limitations on what allowed to be purchased as well. If the money was just put on their card (dates roll throughout the month) then those couple dollars may matter toward the end of the month. It's probably a family amount since most single people can earn up to just under $200 a month.

To add to that, we pay into those kind of social services. So it's not free cash so much pulling out money we've already paid in.

Ok, lets change EBT to SSI (Social Security Check), would you ask the same thing? While EBT is provided to the participants, you really do not know how many people the benefit is for! That "couple dollar difference" might be 5 apples, 2 loafs of bread or a **** load of kool-aid (I had to go there). There are alot of people that will skimp all year long to have extra funds for the holidays, in reality its just like any other payment and the customer has the right to complain about anything they want. If the complaining turns into harassment, disrespect and just right foolishness, then you could report the customer to the EBT/ County Office. I respect EBT customers that purchase healthy/normal food and use coupons, but not alot do. I really wish some foods would not be allowed on EBT, like steaks, lobster and all the other expensive stuff, funds are provided to eat healthy, not eat like a king.

Mr. Frontenac.......THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE THAT REALLY SHOULDN'T HAVE AN EBT CARD.... If you can get your hair did, nails done and got enough for a skin tight dress, I can figure out how to pay for your own food.

Classism at its finest in this thread. Truly spectacular. Considering we all work for Kroger, who doesn't pay us nearly enough, and work for pennies...we're gonna degrade EBT users? Really? I guess the poor should stay eating Bar S in order to appease the public and cashiers alike. It's not like there are beauty schools who offer cheaper styles or thrift stores, right?

There are people on food stamps that live far better than I do. Huge screen TVs, latest phones, designer clothes, etc. Sometimes I wonder why I work when I can mooch off taxpayers and live better.

First off, If I had an issue with my pay, I would find another job! People complain they are not being paid enough, which is completely fine, but its its true....why are you still working there? Being a cashier you see all types of customer, I don't care how anyone pays, but you only see one type of payment with a cart is full of junk (most times half the cart is left behind because there wasn't enough funds for all the merchandise). The points I was making, if someone needs assistance I'm completely fine with it and I'm not placing any judgment on the reasons why they receive a EBT card. But, If someone has enough funds for luxuries, maybe they do not need assistance. Steak, Ribs, Lobster and all other expense items are luxuries, when you can purchase 5lbs of lunch meat for the price of a 1 steak? Hell, I have had people that didn't even know each other shop together.....which is because the "Friend" is going to pay the EBT customer $50 for the $100 in food! (The agencies have also limited the number or replacement cards, because EBT customers were selling their monthly benefit/card then reporting it lost to get next months $$)

Seriously? Wow, eye opening. Guess I'm not that surprised. Anything for money.
