You know those idiots who think you're watching them to see if they're stealing? Well I had one the other day taunt me in the lobby area when I was putting some carts back. Every time I'd come out to put some baskets or carts back, he'd be there, running his mouth at me. Throwing insults.
Wouldn't hurt to ask security about it. Not really a security issue unless you feel physically threatened. Never ever escalate the conversation. I saw a cashier do that one night at 1130pm calling customer vulgar names. Pissed customer off more..... He stormed out of store almost breaking front doors pushing them straight out. Fortunately, they were designed to open like that for emergencies! Definitely not a job worth getting hurt over.
We don't have security. But, you seem to work at a store with special type of customers from what I have read.

Depends. If you feel threatened by his behavior call security (if you have some) but be forewarned. If security doesnt deem it as a threat it's not a threat EVEN if you feel otherwise. NEVER laugh to the antagonistic customers face. This can and WILL escalate the problem given on how the customer acts from your description. We have broken up nasty fights at our store between customers starting a fight and the employee or another customer responding back. Turns out, antagonist couldn't take what was dished back so they resorted to fist fighing.
At your store, I wouldn't play with idiot customers. If they want to mouth off or play a game with you, call your security guard over and kick have them kick them out. Unfortunately, some people just are ignorant and you cant help them, not really worth anyone's time.
Which is exactly why we have to act as our own security at times. We even had corporate come down to pay us a visit. They told us in a meeting to "speak our minds" on how we felt. One outspoken guy said his piece on how lack of security damages our hours and profits and how hes sick of it. He said it tactfully but in a no nonsense tone. Corporate couldn't say much, (because it WAS and IS true..
And they know it). But the outspoken co- worker "disappeared" a month later. I saw him not too long ago and asked where hes been. He said he "quit." (Later said they "let him go" because of "hours."
Hmmm...I think corporate got rid of him because he spoke the truth.
Ok, there is a difference between Corporate and Division Associate. Think of "Corporate" as the people that design the programs and are the suits, Division people are the level above District Mgmt that basically tell the store what to do etc. Corporate sets up the programs and then passes them down to the Division to implement or control the stores. Most Corporate people have never worked in a store or are 15+ years removed from the stores. In any meeting, you have to know your limitations and know who the people are, no Corporate Associate vising a store can fire anyone. Most likely what happened was the Store Manager was embarrassed and took it upon themselves to "handle" the associate. If you do have a "rent a cop" depending on the store and its customers they are "more hardcore" or most of the time just a body standing there.
That's why we act as our own half the time. My buddy offered to do security work (as he does work security at another store) and he said shoplifters eat dirt if they fight against apprehension. And he has fought a few combative shoplifters
