I was recently hired at Kroger, finished training and have orientation some time next week. From what i've heard i'm not really looking forward to it but i just need some extra money to have while in college. I have applied everywhere but they were all "accepting applications" but not hiring. Kroger is a last resort.
i wanted to know if i should join the union? or anything else you think i should know lol. I was told someone from the union will be there to talk to us at orientation.
What are you talking about wanting to know if you should join the union? I HAD to join the union or else lose my job. I HAVE to pay the union fees or else get fired.
really just have some patience and dont ever talk back to anyone and try to smile at all times even if you are tired. When customers approach you for help while you are on break or not working so say no just redirect them to someone else and be on your way
NO!!!!!!!!! Part time it is not worth the money + even if you don't join you still receive benefits from it you've got 45 days as your test period after that you are protected don't let the union reps con you

SAVE YOUR MONEY........If your PT. the contracts don't give much at all to the employee.Your name goes on the list of union members and it benefits what few FT's, Lifers and people thats been there over 10 years. YOu will get the same benefits as those PT's who are in it and like said, not much at all. As a PT your subjected to 6 day weeks for 30 hours or 6 days for 22 hours. They can work you upto 38 hours and still be labeled PT. The Union does NOT take care of the PT's so its not worth it.
i work pt... i chose not join even though they try to con me every year. they would tell you you can write off the union fee on your taxes, you're supporting your co-workers, being part of the union is like having car insurance (you'll never know when you need it), the union due is only a small $10/week (but don't tell you it's over $500/year).... and my favorite... they would tell you that you can leave the union at anytime after you join... HOWEVER, even though you're not technically part of the union, they will still deduct the union dues from your paycheck because you signed for them to deduct it for one year. you have to write several letters for them to stop deducting the union dues before the next year roll over. i know a few coworkers who were suckered into this. the best benefit of being in the union is that it gives some protection to the lazy coworkers.
Right above. They do protect the lazy co-workers. But most of all they protect the Full Time co-worker thats been there 20+ years. We've got several that are scheduled40-45 hours that work about only 20-25 actual labor. When Kroger tries to squeeze more productivity out of them they always say "its not in my contract". They get out of it and the load is passed onto the newer hires to be distributed. So work hard and get more thrown on you.
Seems those people hired way back half the cushiness from 20 years ago implemented in todays time. And don't we all wish we could have a work place like 20 years ago. The grocery store has gotten to where they want every inch of production plus some in todays time. Compare to 20 years ago, the grocery store work sucks big time. I know because I was doing it 20 years ago after school and man it was alot easier and not near as much was expected, the stores were cleaner and employees happier.
YOur name on that Union lists of members is just that. Another name, another +1 they use to bargain with so benefit the FT employees. Read your union contract. PT's get very little. Half the vacation,lower max out in pay, less paid holidays,half the health insurance and can be worked upto 38 hours a week and still be called PT. They can work you FT days and get away with PT benefits.Yet they are expected to make up more than a Majority of the store labor and be more productive than FT's
If your in the Union and PT----Writea letter form and tell them you want out and will join when they focus more on who's doing most of the labor in these stores. Hit'em in the pocket and they'll start making dues worth while.
u got that right ive been working at kroger in brownstown mi.fo 4 yrs now and the lumps with 20+yrs dont really do to much passing it on to the lower senority so i give up careing so i lump also and get overtime on pourpose just to grt some money out of the blood sucking scum bags not to mention the bull**** good for nothing union there.
it all depends on what state you work in....for instance in texas you don't have to join but you have the exact same benefits as union workers....its a right to work state....other states you need to join to protect you benefits...
yes that other person is right, you HAVE to join the union, you have 45 days from the time that they hire you, to see if you are going to work out, and if you do then they have you fill out all these papers about jioning the union and then they take a dues out of your paychecks every week. mine is up to $8.48 every week. The union is really a good thing, because after you are in the union, if kroger tries to fire you for any reason whatsoever you can go to the union and get your job with the pay that you lost. if kroger tries to make you do things that you don't want to or they give sombody more hours than they give you (but only if that person is under you on the schedule) then you can called the union or just let your manager know what is going on and they are supposed to fix your schedule if they don't and you are in the right and they are in the wrong, then you call the union and they will help you out with your situation. they have helped me out a few times. like one time the front end supervisor told me to go back to the deli and lay out cookies i refused because i wasn't trained for that, so i didn't want to screw things up for the people the next day. well the lady in the deli got mad at me because i wouldn't go bvack there and do her job so that she could go out on the floor and talk to her friends. so she write a letter and gives it to the manager and tells him a bunch of lies and he natually believes her because she's been for like 31 years and i've only been there for going on 4 years now. so the manager suspended me for 3 days. i went to the union and even though i lost 24 hours of pay the union got half of that back for me. but if you don'y join the union then you are screwed, because if you get fired then there is nothing that the union can do to help you. you'll have to join the union but some stores are slower at signing you up than other stores are. good luck at staying with kroger. i hope that you like it. i love my job.
