U Scan overnight
Permalink

I have been very concerned about a situation this past year that causes me to have a lot of anxiety and is a major distraction. I work on the Big-K and Juice isles in my Memphis store and have noticed that U-Scan often works on the "honor system" while no attendent is present. The attendants think that carrying the remote while they are off collecting reshop or putting it back on the shelf informs them what is happening on the front end.Even the person filling in at lunch does the same thing. The attendants go up to the front if the remote informs them but an other employee often has to call someone as well. There have been situations where customers were not honest and we lost merchandise. Sometimes there is an incomplete transaction on the screen which probably is an indication that they left without paying.Another time someone had 2 or more of the same item but only scanned one.(Most of the time when a customer just has 1 or 2 items, they don't put them on the scale when they checkout.) Another situation happened when 3 women had a basket full of merchandice,1 of them ran some items through the scanner while the 2 other ones bagged things up in the basket without paying. There are times that I wonder whether someone checked out at all. Some nights are worse than others about an attendant being present but I feel that it happens to much! I don't want to get anyone in trouble or tell anyone what to do because they will know who it was. The attendants are not goofing off, they are just being a little to trustfull.Should the front end be left unguarded? Security leaves at 11:00 and we are on our own.

I think you have a very valid concern. Plus you mention how it is giving you anxiety. Might I suggest calling the kroger hotline where you can point this out anonomously. I am not 100%sure of the number but it is like 1-800-kroger2 or something. Find that out and call it. You sound like you care about the company. or just go to your store manager and tell him/her frankly of your concern. you can not get in trouble for pointing out something you feel is an issue. best of luck!

Because of this I can't see why kroger is even open at night.  Just close the damn doors and let the people work.  ONly people after 11 are drunks and shoplifter, and just a few honest people.  Who the hell shops late anyway.

this is a good point.  at our store, we close at 1 AM but the U scan cashier stays until 2. They shouldn't be around the store before 1 AM when they have to attend the self checkout. They should only be doing the backstock after the store is closed.  I'm not sure how your situation is, if your store is open 24 hrs or whatever. Voice your concern to a manager

There should never be a front end un-attended. If this is the policy of your store manager, then give him a few inventories being way short and he will not be around long. But with the lay-out of our store (488 in mckinney , texas) all the checkouts and U-scan is far off from the door to enter and leave. Walk in the store and you just about have a direct view and path to the beer isle  and out the store without a cashier even seeing you.

no year on this post so i hope it isnt too old just googled and found this page  but......
this is like policy at all the stores i have worked in and/or shopped in (4 of them).  the cashiers are supposed to do all sorts of cleaning, facing, lot, reject sorting...ect.   the lay out of 3 of these stores have the same straight shoot for the beer.  granted, none of the stores i refer to have security or are in very high theft areas but even the lowest theft stores are hit daily and constantly.  it mostly works out okay unless you get a uscan cashier that's a smoker. then they are like never ever near the check outs.
