I've seen management let groc, gm and produce run for extended amounts of time without a backup.
If you want the job:
1. Need the current backup to step up to dept head or step down from the position.
2. Need to make your aspirations known to management. This is very important because its commonly assumed that if you dont ask for the job, you dont want it. You will never be rewarded with something your dont ask for.
3. Senority helps, but not necessary. I didnt need it. Be the better man for the job. Are you the better man?
"This" is wrong. The person with the most senority can bitch and wave the Union handbook and get the backup position. Promotions go to the person with the most senority at Kroger.

had this happen once in our dairy. The guy didnt last a week before wrecking the department, and they had to bring in someone from another store.

How the hell did THAT happen? Senior managemnt is to blame on this one.
Not sure how it works where you guys are, but the back-up positions in my experience have always been handled much more informally that dept head positions (senority rules in those situations).
At my store:
I got the backup head grocery because the 2 others with more senority were simply not reliable and had several ncns's. Now they don't work here thanks to thier inability to show up for work.
The backup GM was given to a checker with GM experience from a smaller store ahead of a list of people who wanted the job. Several clerks went to the union on this on to no avail. She was replaced later by the ex produce backup. He had zero gm experience but had proven himself time and again as a dependable worker.
The backup Produce in my store used to work in meat, but being low man on the totem pole meant she had vitually no hours, so she begged for more hours so they had her help in produce. She now has the backup job simply because she has shown management that she will not let them down. Everyone in the dept has more senority than her.
In all these cases senority was never called in. They needed a leader, not just someone who wanted an extra 35 cents an hour.
well, i suppose seniority has a place to get the position, but if you don't have the skills or the drive to "be the better man for the job", you won't last. by invoking the union and going against management's wishes (ie. they have someone else in mind for the spot with less seniority), you are painting a big-ass target on your head and they'll be looking for reasons to push you out and put in the person they originally wanted
As well they should. This bullsht about seniority makes me wanna punch somebody. GIVE ME the right person for the job, I'll not only make sure they get their hours, I'll make sure they get their full time status and quarterly raises as well.
And thats the way it should be. Upper management recognizes "talent", and promotes them. Senority only should play into it as far as talent goes. Someone who has been around for a few years but still does a marginal job shouldn't get a position over even someone with only a year in but does exceptionally well. The idea that the "next in line" should get the job by default is just silly. By all means they should have a shot, and usually when a manager departs, that person will be filling in until a replacement is decided upon. That's the most senior person's time to shine.
Out here for Fred Meyer, we are having sort of a crisis of management. Nobody wants the management jobs. It makes sense to take a seafood manager job even if you are one of those "I dont want any responsibility" folks because it does net you about $2/hr more than a journeyman seafood clerk, and you work a normal 7-4 or 8-5 or earlier daily. Even then, any vacancy is usually posted, and reposted until someone finally applies. Meat managers though, only get an extra 50 cents an hour over journeyman meat cutter pay, and then get bitched and moaned at over key retailing standards. The bonus last year for even top performers was a whole $300. Not worth it to most of the guys.
Kroger needs to stop with the "interchangeable people" idea. They think that all employees are equally retarded, and that anyone can fill any spot. As long as you follow "the company plan" then you will get good results, in their view. So their goal for managers is to find people who will steadfastly follow the plan without deviation. Which technically can be anyone who can read the plan and tell people what it is. Following from that, nobody deserves any special recognition for performance via bonuses, raises, etc because a trained monkey could do the job as good as you could, if you follow the plan like its a holy bible. So your individual success is simply the degree in which you follow the plans, and any failure is simply a lack of carrying it out properly. So no raises or bonuses for just doing the job as designed, in their view.
Giving preference to the more senior employees is a terribad idea, especially at Kroger. Seriously, nobody gets fired unless they get caught stealing. Any bumbling idiot who just barely manages to not burn the store down can keep a job for a long time and have seniority.
i think where i am at (cincinnati) seniority only applies to the grocery style departments. but for the deli, bakery, meat, etc - you have to be chosen for it then go to classes.
are there classes given for grocery back-ups? when i was asked to be a back-up, i was with kroger for about 7 or 8 months. the store manager kept telling me that this is unpresidented to be asked so quickly & it takes people several years to be asked. i told them i would be honored to be a back-up but with the condition that i stayed at the store i was at. they agreed to it. then w/in another 8 months the damn store was closed down. i was then shipped tp a really crazy store with psycho deli workers. i literally has Bevis and Butthead in real life plus the Golden Girls working there. Plus the store manager was (still is) a complete ass. By shear luck I was transferred out of that store but had to travel a good 1/2 hour to and from work. Soon I figured out that it wasn't worth my time for the pay so I asked for a voluntary demotion and got myself to a store w/in 7 minutes of my house.
I'm no longer a back-up. I'm maxed out in pay as a deli clerk. I don't get the headache of 'babysitting' stupid employees any more. And I'm loving life.
there is no official title as a market backup in swkma in the meat departments. There are market assistants and with Key retailing, , there is to be a market assistant to be named and scheduled. markets can have several assistants and there are a few with none. Should the market manager go on vacation , they can determine who gets the relief pay on the qualifications of who will do a better job in spite of who has the seniority or job title.
I need to talk to management, if I want the produce backup position. The girl who is the backup in produce right now only does green rack. I can do almost everything in the department except for writing orders. She hardly knows how to do anything over there, and my seniority is higher than hers...so do you think I'd get it? I also have been told I do a way better job on the green rack than she does.
i worked there for 1 yr two months and became grocery backup... been there two yrs may 6th. If you shine doing your job, you will be noticed. no ass kissing required lol

here is the problem. too many older workers that just does not want to conform to what kroger wants to do and work the good old days system. does nothing to help them get promoted and causes themtojust be passes over and bitch about others being ass kissers because of their in ability to change
That's BS new store open in Arkansas, 23 yr old ass licker only working for Kroger 2 weeks given the back up job ,,,,, mommys a co manager at an other store!!! Its not what you know , its who you know !!!!!!!!!!!!
I was at Kroger 3 weeks and became backup.. no retail experience didnt know anyone I was again promoted to deli/bakery manager a year and a half later now I make $18 an hour and I worked my ass off to get to where I am.
I can't stand ass-kissers. If you're going to move up, show your real work ethic. Ass-kissers make me sick.
And that's all we have everywhere any more. Including management. Everybody jockying for popularity so they can avoid responsibility or even, for f u c k ' s sake, knowing what the hell they're doing
