I didn't start out interviewing for that position. When we started my interview the head of the store listed off positions that were open, all of which being part time. As the interview went on I was telling him about my past work experience, during which he offered me this position based on my past work experience. It may of only been 32 hours a week, but still none the less any advice?
Oh and on another note dont expect 32 hours. They can hire you saying whatever and drop you down to 16 without saying anything. Theyll probably just forget or want to balance the hours and you will get cut down. Oh and dont be surprised if you end up working five four hour shifts a week or something along those lines.
first off remember that all advice received here will be both good and bad. we got some real bitter jackholes who post here. but let me give you some good advice, don't work to hard and have fun always. find out how many hours you must maintain to be considered 'full time'. right now you are actually nothing and must work a good 12 weeks or so to accumulate a set hour pattern and also to show your merit to the company. try to work above 34 hours per week to be considered full time. i dont think 32 will cut it. does that make sense?
Be polite, even if it's only so you can call a customer a liar if they complain and say you were rude.
Stand your ground. If you can't do something without risking a writeup, being fired, or breaking the law, DO NOT be afraid to say NO. To any customer. Idk where you are, but here in TN, there are state laws concerning alcohol and tobacco sales, lottery, and returns of baby formula, and federal laws with western union and money orders. Don't break them.
Learn EVERYTHING. I know you're still being taught the ropes, but once you start to understand your job, start exploring. Poke around the ticketmaster, lottery, western union, money orders, registers, paperwork, etc. The more you know up there, the more valuable you are.
Thank you everyone for your replies so far. My boss told me that my job would consist of answering the phone, handling customer issues, taking care of lotto tickets, western union, money orders, as well at the end of the night counting the money in the registers and preparing deposits.
Customer service is a lot of things to know but once you get it down it's a very laid back job. You occasionally get an angry customer (depending on how nice the rest of your store is) but other then that you don't get too many complaints. Western Union money transfers can be scary at first so make sure someone trains you and makes sure you are doing the right thing. It's easy so don't worry.
