I currently live in Nevada, and work at Smiths, I am trying to move to California (Food 4 Less/Ralphs) by the end of the month, I put in a request to transfer almost a month ago.
I did the part that I was told that I needed to do, call stores, make sure they have my position, and made sure they had openings, one did. I let my HR manager know and submitted the paper she gave me to fill out.
I feel like I have been givin a run around as well, first I was told that all I needed to do was have my store director call the other store, and fill out the sheet, which I did, then was told that my HR manager just has to call the HR manager at the other store, which she did, and was then given a number where no one answers it, she then faxed the paper that I filled out to the number that was on the bottom of the form.
Now I am told that I filled out the wrong papers, and that I have to GO to Cali, the store that I want to transfer to, to meet them in person, and get the papers because I need Ralph's papers, not Smiths.
I tried to call them instead (hoping they could fax my store the papers I needed) and then was imidetely told that they instead filled the position.
I am at a loss on what to do, my HR manager has said that she has never done a out of state transfer before and is going by what their telling her.
I didn't understand how I was told that I had to go to Cali either (I couldn't just up and get down there, I don't have a car), I had a set move date June 2nd, and now have had to puch this back.
The people at my store have been awesome at trying to get this done for me, but since they haven't done this before, they are just going by what they are being told, it's coming to days before I am set to be moved by.
So my question: What exactly does moving to a store out of state entail? I am a courtesy clerk, and have been with the company since 2008 (first time moving stores at all), and am moving out of state with a friend.

This isn't much help, but if it were me I'd be blowing up the phones in that transfer store until I pissed enough people off to get some answers. You're being jerked around by people who don't care...MAKE them care. Good luck~
Thats what it feels like personally, getting jerked around, and I would, however, I don't want to get on bad terms of a store that I might potentionally work at. I am leaving this store on good terms, and I want to start at the new store on good terms as well.
I'm just very frusterated at this point, I asked my HR manager if she could call corprate HR and see if there is anything they can do on their part, and said she won't be able to until Friday the latest.
I hate to tell you but......nobody in the Kroger organization does care. I have never heard of a courtesy clerk being transfered. It is very hard for a clerk to be transfered. Management is all I have heard it being done for. In my opinion you would be better off getting hired as a courtesy clerk first and then quitting and moving to So Cal. How long have you been a CC? Do you cashier or have any other experience that the receiving store would be interested in. We have a lot of turnover in So Cal and I would give preference to someone that would take less training or that would have skills that we would be able to put to work.
I have been going through the same thing. I am also transferring through different divisions. Find out where the southern cal. corporate office is and tell them that you want the recruiter for your specific store number in California. They should be able to tell you who that is. Then get ahold of the recruiter for that specific store number and tell them that you would like to see if you are able to transfer. My recruiter who is now working with me told me he is going to "bridge" me over from fred myers to Frys food. So far so good. I have went through quite a bit as well. I decided that since the recruiter in my specific address did not show much compassion or initiative, I took it upon myself to apply to a different area, and BINGO! By the way clerks do transfer all of the time. Keep trying, and good luck.
I have been with the company since 2008, so 4 years, and I also know Stock/Pallet Jack Operating and EAS, not training as a cashier however. I also mentioned this when I wrote to the personal department. And now it looks like it's going throulgh, I was just contacted back saying that they were in the process of finding a store for me in the area I requested. So I hope it goes through soon. -fingers crossed-
Believe me,I know that feeling. The management tells you to contact HR and then when you try, they don't have the courtesy to return phone calls after numerous voicemails you leave them.I tried to go to the Nashville division. After talking to the management team several times in the last 4-5 months ,management told me that it is not allowed for full-time associates to transfer to that division.
I transfer from va to my after being with company just under 6 months. and didn't really have any of those problems. things went somewhat smooth. the biggest issue I had was went I got to new store it took about a month to get everything in system but I was there and working about 37 hrs a week during that time. I think the secret is to be willing to work where ever they need u. I had worked in as many as 4 different depts in one week. and since starting with company have worked or helped out when shorthanded in 8 different depts
"Transferring" allows you to basically not have to get "rehired", but depending on local policies (Union Rules, etc) not everything is the same. With each Union being a single entities, benefits, hourly wages do not automatically transfer. In most instances, you basically are a "new hired" in the Unions eyes. I don't understand why the Unions haven't established a reciprocity agreement, allowing members an easier time with transferring.
