what should I do?

Lately there's been a lot of work to do in my department, so much that at times I end up staying maybe 15 minutes over to finish my work. Its usually things that can't wait till the next day I work in a perishible department.

The other 2 in our department are part timers, they call in regularly for "medical" reasons and when they do show up its like they weren't even here. Anyway I strive to have this department looking tip top more so than my dept. Head.

My question is if I dont stay late then my Dept. Head gets upset he has even wrote me up, if I stay late to finish management writes me up for o.t. so then what do I do????

Are you full time or part time?

Only work OT if your store manager approves it.  Never decide on your own.

Speak to your store manager about what you are supposed to do if your department manager decides to write you up.

Keep track of what you do each day.  Count cases.  I am serious.  I do not know about frozen, but in grocery, we are expected to stock 60 cases an hour without conditioning.  Change bale, stock, run register, condition,  recieve, move meat and bakery to their coolers, ect.  Do not stand around chatting or using your cell phone on the clock.  Keep busy.  Take breaks when scheduled.

My department manager tried yelling at me and a new guy one morning and told us to gtfo and told us we can explain to the store manager why the work isn't done.  I knew every detail of everything we did that day(wrote it down).  He was only seeing the facts he wanted to see.  We still had 2 hours to finish the tasks if I was using TSG.  My store manager(who would not speak to me without a deprtment manager present) saw my list and said she didn't see time wasted.  My direct department manager apologized as soon as we clocked in the next shift.  He never apologizes ever.  He's an oldtimer that can be cool but also an *******.

PS.  The union can defend you easier from a department manager writing you up than a store manager.  15 minutes of OT is not worth the hassle from a store manager.  Find a way to get the work done without OT.

Your department head can be over ruled by management. The write up you get from your department head are not going to effect your job unless they are essessive. No over time unless management tells you to. If writes ups continue get the union.

in some contracts a department head can't write up an employee. They must go to management and have them write you up or it can be thrown out.

Do only what you know you can get done in the time you're given.  Don't forget to allow time for your breaks.   If it means something doesn't get put for sale, then so be it.  For exanple, I work in the bakery department.  If I know I only have an hour to spare, I'm not going to get out several cases of cookies and try to bake, package, and label them.  I might get out one case but that's it.  I've been doing this job long enough to know whether or not I have time to get something done.
