I read through the union contract and the employee handbook and saw no citation of having to tuck our shirts in. I don't believe management can do anything about a person not complying with this request because it is not listed as part of the uniform code in the handbook or contract.
Question #2: I am classified as 'General Clerk', but I am usually scheduled for 'Utility' I used to work in Grocery Replenishment, but I was moved out. I'm still sometimes scheduled for Grocery Replenishment, but it's random and infrequent. I'd like to know if I have any authority over what work I'm scheduled for, and what department I do based on my classification. I cannot find any suitable information on what a General Clerk's required duties are, or if it matters. When I am scheduled for other departments, I still get asked to do things for Utility, and sometimes Dairy. I dislike being asked to help other peoples' departments because they are too slow, and I have to take up the slack, and I feel I should primarily do the work that I'm scheduled for, and should have some regularity in the work I do.
My state is Texas, and I am under Union Contract.

Thanks, yes I accidentally got in the union and I heard I cannot leave until my anniversary date.
My store actually snuck me into the grocery department, just by randomly scheduling me, when I was a courtesy clerk, and I got no raise whatsoever. I had to go through the union to get reclassified because they're so underhanded. Now they use me for whatever they want because I basically have no department as a general clerk, but they schedule me for utility and grocery and sometimes dairy. I used to work really hard, but now I just clock in and do nothing except what I'm told because of how they treat me, because the store manager basically won't hear anything I have to say. I don't want to quit yet, but I probably will.

if you're smart you'll quit. or ask to be assigned to a certain department.. you'll never move up as general clerk, you'll always be managements 'little bitch boy' they'll throw you around anywhere they want have u do whatever nasty job they want... they tried to put me in the deli when i started, but i firmly said i wanted to be a night stocker because im a man... i did not join the union because here in texas the union has to fight for your rights regardless of whether you pay union dues or not... pretty much all the union is doing for you is stealing an hour of your work every week (what is it $7.50?)... if i were you i would quit, put in your two weeks notice, or threaten to quit if they don't move you to another department, like dairy, produce, grocery(if u think u can hang w the big boys), or if u want bakery, or deli ... ive done this for years, kroger has its perks like cheap insurance, but also has its faults like lower than average pay imho, and the union protects anyone who wants to either be lazy or get in trouble a lot.
hope i've enlightened you some as to how it all works :)
Tucking in shirt- That is at the managers' discretion. If they ask you to, then yes, tuck in your shirt. I work nights and there are no customers in the store. I work without my shirt tucked in. My manager did ask me to tuck in my shirt one morning while the store was open. I did, It didn't kill me. I am a heavy set guy and do not like tucking in my shirt.
What exactly are you classified as? Day grocery clerks at my store run Grocery, Frozen, Dairy, help run registers, help bag, nutrition and are supposed to "replenish".
A utility clerk, basically a glorified courtesy clerk(makes 15 cents more than a bagger), can be assigned anything in the store except stocking product. When it mentions certain departments on the schedule, you are supposed to be cleaning in those departments.
Utility clerk is a new position here and no one knows exactly what they are supposed to be doing. We have one and can have as many as 5 in our store. He asks the managers what to do and they can't keep him busy...unable to find tasks for him to do. I am not sure what they are going to do with 5 of them!! He, too, was stocking(floating to all the departments) but the union rep put a stop to that. It was actually beneficial to the company to have a spare person.. But, rules are rules.
As a general clerk, you follow the directions of the store manager or head of department you are working in that day. If you don't follow directions to the best of your ability, you won't last or be promoted elsewhere. This includes tucking in your shirt.
PS. If you are a student, your primary focus should be on bettering yourself with an education. Do not get stressed out about small things like working at Kroger.

Now I'm really curious to see UFCW 455's new contract. It sounds VERY similar to the new contract Michigan UFCW just passed through.
