I just recently thought about this and it seems like a good idea that could be easily implemented into the contract and would force Kroger to actually replace a shift rather than have one person do it. Many of you know I work in Meat Department and we're pretty much all topped out on full-time. A few weeks ago our seafood clerk called in sick at 11:30 am and spoke to a co-manager. This was never relayed back to the meat department until 2:55 PM that day which her shift began at 2 pm that day. They only allowed our seafood manager to stay 1 hour of overtime on a friday.  This means because they didn't want to pay her overtime i'm stuck with cleaning up the backroom, filling the counter, waiting on customers, breaking down the service case and wrapping that product into the counter, and breaking down seafood along with having to condition the department its alot of work to do for just one person when its a two man job. Anyways, the language in the contract would state that if a shift isn't replaced by the company the employee would be paid 1 1/2 (time and a half) for that work performed unless they call in someone to replace the shift. I've seen this happen especially in perishable departments.

Would be great, but corporate showing gratitude towards employees? Hah.

LOL... well, sometimes you just can't call somebody in.  Even on my front end we can't always replace shifts and that's beyond maddening.

I gave up counting the days I had to move people around for coverage, done an extra hour OT, or been forced into double duty of covering floor and service desk, sometimes self-checkout tossed in too. 

It's SICK!  

Frankly I'm at the point where I see store management as derelict in its duty to make sure the schedule's correct, that we're informed of call outs in a timely manner (you're not the only one who gets surprised that way), that we are have information about relief help in store that day, and that they hire enough people with decent availability so we have a fighting chance at covering shifts.  And for Heaven's sake, stop stealing our dependable people for other depts! 

And when it comes to using relief, I don't want to steal someone from a dept for 2 and 3 hours at a time. 

I have to say dept. heads that only want to work mornings and pick Tuesday at their required night when a chimpanzee and two trainees could make green half-hours that day need a reality check and should not be yelling at supervisors they've helped put in impossible situations.  You made the mess, so you take responsibility.  Fix. The. Problem.  Or get out of the way for someone who will.

This is going to sound stupid, and it's a little off topic but what are green half hours?

I always see it on the huddle sheets and still don't know what it really means.

 This is mostly pertaining to perishable departments since they're usually fully staffed. Its either they get someone in at overtime or pay the person overtime for their hardship they're having to do since management doesn't want to bring in someone to relieve them.

I don't see that happening.  Like the front end poster said, sometimes no one will come in for that call off.  Seems like you have a bigger problem regarding managment and communication.  If you'd knwn earlier in the day that you were not going o have that evening helper, you might have been able to plan better.
