If they call people from other departments to check, why don't they have checkers help other departments when there are 3 checkers with nothing to do? I am referring mostly to evenings since I work nights when I see this happenning.
Imagine how much time they are saving you by doing this. And you whine when you have to check for ten minutes? It's not like they're judging your ring tender.
Technically, when cashiers (checkers) have "nothing to do," they should be cleaning. They, like baggers, are considered front-end, and are required to take care of multiple front-end duties when it's dead or there's an extra cashier. This is why there's no "reverse quevision." Front end gets priority. Now, as for putting it into practice, it doesn't really work well. Blame the supervisors for letting the cashiers slack off.
Management can't give the checkers a very large side task because at any minute it would be back to the front again. Customers seem to make their way to the front in herds.
Anon, my suggestion to you at this point is if you don't like your job and are jealous of cashiers, ask to become a cashier yourself. Your thinking is convoluted.
I never said I didn't like my job. I was just expressing my opinion. Isn't that what this forum is for?
No, you asked a question which I and others answered for you. You didn't like the answers. You're free to disagree, but I'm not sure many people will agree with your viewpoint.
Plus, this is pretty much common sense. Do we really need to explain why front-end is given priority over the other departments?
Night stockers do not stock floral, nutrition, or drug gm. These are the people subsidizing the front end in my store. I could not even get management to assign a couple courtesy clerks to help with Christmas trees, even though we are physically unable to handle them ourselves.

Why doesn't management cross train more of the clerks in the other departments for checking? That's pretty ridiculous you can't get help with the Christmas trees. It sounds like your managers suck.
Like flower child said, night stockers cover grocery.
They however, do not cover all the other departments.
And I still don't get why the hell floral is called up when it should be treated like any other service department. As soon as someone from floral is called up to cashier, they're wanted at their counter.

This.
My FES constantly goes 'WHERE'D HE GO" if I even put returns in the organizing basket...and I brisk walk. Plus we're suppose to help with queing too or bag while relieving baggers to do those tasks.
I do what I can though, mainly just cleaning..putting more bags up so they don't have to do as many at the end of the night..simple tasks that don't involve us leaving. I've been asked to turn off my light and do other tasks though, but that's when I was only about 70-80% efficient. Now that I'm 95-110% they're like oh no my butt is staying in front lol.
All I ask of the cashiers when leaning on perimeter departments for back up cashier assistance......ask politely over the intercom (don't be a bitch) and switch off department! Just because the Floral Dept is the closest to the front end, doesn't mean that's the only person you should call....rotate between dairy-produce-management-floral and the willingness to help will be much more positive! Also, front end needs to use their power of observation- if I'm with a customer don't call me twice to check!
