Depends on how close to the door they are. if they are walking out I sigh and say "enjoy the free ****, scumbag." if they are walking in the door I call for management and security. If i'm free i'll follow them.

We use to have a security guard who gave the person 3 chances to hand over said item when they left store. If they refused or got violent he tackled them. If they ran... Well... Let's just say, one shoplifter said it was like being tackled by a VERY pissed off quarterback
If you actually see the person hiding it on their body, let the customer service person or a store manager know immediately. Do not confront the person yourself. You have to be absolutely certain you saw them hide it on their body.
I saw someone stealing stuff from outside our store once and called the manager to let them know. They walked around the building and put it in their car trunk. There was nothing the manager could do unless they actually saw them stealing it.
If a person is desperate to steal from kroger, they might be desperate enough to mess you up if you confront them.
It sux, but shoplifting is part of being in retail. They think they are stealing from a multibillion dollar company. In reality, they are stealing from the employees(causing less pay) and the other customers(causing higher prices).
I work on night crew and the other night when they called for break-time, I was hungry and in a hurry to get my food. So, I zipped on down to the tuna isle to get a box of bumble bee tuna salad, and zipped on to the next isle for a power bar, and this customer that was on the opposite end of the tuna was at the same time zipping over to the next isle that I went to and was watching me and I didn't realize right away why and I gave him a strange look like what's wrong and then he looks at me strangely, and walks away, then it hit me that he thought I was going to shoplift, and it pissed me off. I'm not going to be stealing, it is not worth losing my job over!!
We've caught many shoplifters at my store. I was once leaving to go home and I cut down the promo isle heading for the time clock. I greet every customer on my way out the door, but as I approached this one lady I said hello and she looked like a deer in headlights, as I was passing her I noticed she had torn some of the markdown tags off and put it on fresh meat. I alerted my store manager and gave him details on what she looked like and what isle she was down when it happened. We also have had this one woman where she pre-bagged everything and had money in her hands. She went over to the lottery machine to buy a few tickets. Well, what she didn't know is that my co-worker had stuck a sensor on her base cart as he walked by and when she went out the door her heart dropped. They asked for a receipt and she started with the "oh, my blood pressure. I need to go get my medicine" or something to that degree. We told her to leave her groceries here and we can talk about it later. She never came back that day. We currently have a well known theft that management is currently allowing that needs to be addressed. There is a business owner who comes in and he will ask to sample a chicken wing, a french fry, etc. He goes to the bakery and takes up to 3 - 4 varieties of "samples" they have and puts them in a plastic bag. Its nearly equal to that of 2 boxes of cookies. He will come to the meat department and eat all the crab salad we sample. When we had a demo booth from a 3rd party he ate 6 samples of soups along with the crab salad. When he asked for extra samples of her doing a demo of pizza he threw it away. We now think he is stealing, so we're watching him, but what an ******* none the less.

From what i remember only management that has been trained to handle that should deal with it. Their have been several shoplifters caught at the store i work at. The last one was a lady that was using her child to help in her shoplifting, sad by i dont think it would surprise anyone here.

Yeah afaik no hourly employees can stop a shoplifter.
I've seen adolescents caught that said they were just sent in to get some items but just randomly decided to shoplift... Yeah right. Everyone knows the coward parent sent the kid in to steal thinking they'd be let go if caught... NOPE! Now on top of not getting their stolen goods, they have to post bond and pay court costs, etc.

In Texas they just write them a ticket if its under $50 and its like a class A Misdemeanor.
