What I've been doing lately is when they "need" help up front I sneak up there and look at lines. If lines are not bad and we have plenty of checkers, then I decide just to continue with my work. They do NOT need an extra checker up front if it's slow and we have tons up front. They can handle it. Just put on your Big Boy/Girl pants and man/woman up. I've got my job to do too.
I was called up SEVEN TIMES in 3 hours today... and was the only person in my department. They got a chitty close, and have no one to blame but themselves for it.
Sounds like us some days. And many days it's because several front end associates called out, especially on those nice, sunny days. I honestly don't think they review the front end schedules. Most senior citizen days, there is only one cashier until 9 a.m. Again, high volume store. So how many cashiers does a smaller store have? ZERO? I forgot- during my beat down, the manager stated that she understands if there is only one person in the department. She must be totally out of it, as we are called regularly when only one person is scheduled, and it's rare that we do overlap. We have coverage from 9 a.m. 'till 8 p.m., with the late coverage (unofficially) for relief help.

We get called up front when the system isn't even calling for it.
At my store we have been "over-manned" on QV, like when lanes open is higher than action now or 30 minutes for too long. But apparently nobody gets punished for that inefficiency. America .-.

I can't say this is the case at your store, but if the screen says you're over-manned, but you still have lines that are longer than 1+1, which do you think matters? I'll give you 1 guess and a hint: it ain't the balls on the tv.
