I am just wondering, how long has the most senior employee at your store been there? At our store, there is a man that works in grocery that has worked for kroger since November 1958 and has 16 years on the next person in seniority.
We have a dude that's been working at the same store for over 40 years since he was 15. It's the only job he's ever had. He's worked every department in the store, been offered management positions, but chooses to be a front end self checkout clerk and sets his own hours. He always takes off the holidays too.
My former dept. head had 35 years before she retired last year. Now i think our DSD guy has been there about 38 years or so. As far as I know he's been there the longest.
We have someone on the front end who's been here 40 years. He used to be a salesman in an office but supposedly Kroger was better than that so he snagged a 70s union contract and gets to make $17 an hour working at a non-managerial position in a grocery store.
I wonder why all DSD's seem to have been around a long time.
Widely considered to be one of the easiest full time positions in the store. I know ours was a co manager for a while, but stepped down to do DSD because of the stress.

Well, it's a pretty easy job considering you practically never have to deal with customers. All it is is checking in orders and making sure the backroom stays neat. The hours are pretty good too. Ours works from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

At my old store it was that way. Little responsibility. Good hours. Old guy who pretty much just sat by the back door all day.
At my current store, however, our DSD clerk runs around like crazy. Runs stock on random semi-vendor grocery items. Yells at vendors all day long. Comes in at like 2 every morning and often works 50+ hour weeks.
In fact, there's so much to do with it that we're getting a 2nd FT DSD position the first of the year.

What is a DSD again?
Direct Store Delivery clerk. Handles receiving of all goods, signs in vendors, responsible for scanning damaged/expired items, does grocery markdowns, and keeps the backroom neat. It sounds like a lot but it's a lot easier than actually running a department.

In my store at least the DSD guy has his own little desk to sit at. Granted it's a little table, nothing like the managers desk but hey it's better than being out on the floor all day.
We use to have a guy nicknamed Gramps in our store. He was there 40+ years until he retired. He was a "Leave me alone and let me do my job" kind of guy. And he got away with that frame of thinking. Anyone else? You'd be pulled into management office. But when things needed to get done he got them done
42 years currently working as a drug gm clerk and will be retiring next year. We have another at 40 as DSD receiver, and a few in the mid 30's.
I would have questioned my sanity after year one. You must have an addiction to pain and suffering and low pay.
Keep in mind all of these people were grandfathered in from old contracts with better pay & benefits. It's not like they're working for minimum wage. Our meat manager with 33 years is making 23 an hour, the DSD clerk is making about 17 an hour, and the drug gm making just under 16. It's not great money, but if it's something you don't hate and it pays the bills, why not. :D
