Layoff Notice a Formality?

Today I was called to the manager's office to be given a layoff notice. I had to sign it and another employee was there and had to sign it as a witness. It stated that when there was no work I wouldn't have any scheduled hours. I've been working for Kroger for about 6 months and I've had several weeks with no scheduled hours so why am I just being given this now? Was I supposed to have scheduled hours all along? I was assured by the manager it was just a formality and this notice was given to all to all part-time employees. Has anyone else received one of these?

If anything, I guess they really just wouldn't have any hours for you, period.


Two main reasons why you'd have zero hours for succeeding weeks:

1. They don't like you. Either you worked too slowly but already past your probation or they just don't like you.

2. Hours were drastically cut. Not a whole lot of hours to go around at all.


Reading your post, I'd bet it's number 2. Being hired for roughly six months.... that's about the higher levels of activity (with summer, 4th of July, back-to-school, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) for a store. Also, the first four or five months of the year are notorious for just severe cuts in hours (even experienced it myself).


Either way, try to find another job to fill the void the soonest you can.

What division are you in? Have you actually asked any other part time employees if they had to sign one also?

 

Personally, I would NOT have signed it. If you don't sign it, what are they going to do, cut your hours?

 Pretty much this. I've never had a layoff notice in my time working here.

I believe this would be so management can circumvent the minimum hours mandate allowed by your union contract.


Like, our contract says we have to be scheduled at last 17 hours, or something like that. I could be wrong, but I believe by signing that, you're waiving that mandate.
