I hear you. All Unions, clubs, and organizations become complacent if the members don't get involved and take part in improving the system. So what would you change? Please limit yourself to one thing you want to be better. Now what are we going to do? I'm here for you? blankstare

Ain't none of you have ever faced the real threat of the teacher's union. They're the most nastiest, scummiest, wretched group of people I've ever heard of.

I'm not sure how far you can go and not get your job back under the union system.

You can be a literal do nothing, get fired, grieve it and come back to work then get promoted in the same year.  wtf?

You can commit fraud as a dept head, get fired, grieve it and come back to work at Kroger.  Other than straight up thefts or claims of job abandonment, I haven't seen anybody not come back yet.

Well The South tried to get rid of The Union a few hundred years ago and wasn't able to succeed so I don't think a second try will work.
Unless you meant the union with Kroger in which case it's so virtually useless that it's almost like it is not there in the first place.

The South didn't try to get rid of the Union. They only wanted the Union to leave them alone and let them do their.... thing.

And I'm sure you've been with Kroger for 20+ years.

It is not POSSIBLE to get that anymore for the rest of us. If I was hired today, and worked at Kroger for 20 years, I still wouldn't get anything close to what you get.

You're joking right? You attempted to "fix" something, and used the wrong word. It is "lose", not "loose". disbelief

You can get that much by being a Grocery Manager and without that +20 year thing. Unfortunately, I think that rate of pay is why managers are always on Grocery Manager's asses, and hence it has a higher turn out rate than any other department.

And yeah he's probably got 25-30 yrs. In our current contract in my division, 5 week vacations were axed 10 years ago. Max is 4 now. 4yrs = 2, 10 yrs = 3, 20 yrs = 4.

I have to show that I'm not the know-it-all douche here in the forum. Hence why I highlighted it.

Your friendly neighborhood grocery store is behind your perception that the union is bad. It is the conservative and corporate culture.  They can make it look very bad or very good for anyone.  I worked 38 years, and worked harder and with more restrictions than most.  The union is your necessary friend if you want to have the job for awhile.  Go to college, and you will see that your situation will improve, or, let's just say this isn't a career job any more.  Show spunk, work smart, SMILE! The union will appear to take the employee's side when you are in trouble, but if you kiss ass to the customers you cannot go wrong.  I worked very hard for 38 years.  Many times they wanted me gone because I didn't fit in, but because of the union I have benefits, and I worked nights so they loved me.  Learn to ignore the do nothing workers. There is a reason your employer wants you to feel bad about unions.  Without a union you are going to be jacked!

Excel at customer service and say yes to as many customers as possible.  If that doesn't work, change grocery stores.  Start over - lather - repeat.  If you are angry they will know.  Become an expert at customer service and they will all be eating out of your hands in a year or so...unless they don't like you.  Then go to another chain.  Stay in the union!  I had run-ins with the union, but in the end I knew who had my back.

I also want to say that your company will let a few people just hang out at work doing nothing.  There is a reason for that just as they allow coworkers to bully.  They cannot fire people, so they can make your life miserable.  Believe me they can and will.  They will and can send people through your line to make trouble also.  I had a coworker who orchestrated a scheme where she has a snap customer go through USCAN with multiple coupons and multiple items, multiple times.  I not only was encouraged to take multiple and large orders on USCAN, but the management asked me to push the clear button to override when a customer put too much in the bag and didn't record it.  I know this was orchestrated that the crazy customer would complain to a coworker about me, and no doubt others.  There were a few weeks where there would be times everyone on USCAN would be making the alarm go off at once.  After two years with pitch perfect performance on USCAN, this, all of a sudden happening made it obvious that I was being purged from the workplace.  The crazy customer would yell at me and make it near impossible to wait on other customers in a meaningful way.  I left. I was so paranoid that I could no longer work.  The lady who set me up with her friends stealing said she was getting back at me for something she says I did.  She told management I threatened her.  I became sick, exhausted, and could no longer work when I realized management was behind it. I went on disability since the doctor didn't think I could handle it.  Don't ever underestimate Kroger.  They do not want unions, nor do they want to pay a decent wage.  Corporations in general are getting that way.  It is probably not personal, just business.

I'm sorry to hear of your hostile environment, and its effect on you. We all have to know who we are and what we stand for. Then build on relationships that reinforce our values. If this is not possible, look for another culture with in this organization that fits. Location, location, location.

All well and good for those who have been there since Moses crossed the red sea.  For us new timers, the only thing the union has been good for is deducting money from our paychecks.  I'm a union member, still Part Time, still Minimum Wage, still no benefits to speak of.  The Union is a scam.
