Discontinuing in the bakery

So like half the items in the bakery department are being discontinued.

Everything from blueberry pies to cookies and cream cakes to kaiser rolls.

What the hell are we going to have left except boring italian bread and baguettes that most people don't even want?

Is this an excuse to turn us into Walmart where they don't even bake most of their stuff in store? Just another excuse to be able to cut hours as we won't have as many needed for production.

why even HAVE a bakery department then?

Gonna roll it all into deli, most likely.

I hope they don't do that here at our store. I love the cookies and cream cake.

The cookies and cream cake, i meant. But Double Choclate chip cookies are on that list too.

This is a list for all Cincy/Dayton stores.

It's a race to the bottom and Kroger is leading the way.

I was told it's because they want to "streamline" production.  They want to get the number of PLU numbers down to around 250.  Two things I heard they were getting rid of are the Sweet Italian and the Twin French.    We sell 8 to 16+ loaves of each a day.  It certainly sells a lot better than that stupid artisan bread they keep trying to push down everyone's throats.  I was told well maybe other stores don't sell that much.  Well, do those other stores even carry it?  When customers start complaining about us not carrying stuff, I'm going to give them corporate's phone number.  I think eventually we're not going to be baking anything at all.  Everything is going to be either par-baked or fully baked.  The reason is Kroger doesn't want to invest any time or money in training new bakers who stick around for a long time.  They want to be able to hire someone off the street at minimum wage and have them come in and be able to "bake" bread with no training at all.

That's what I think too, we're heading towards having everything fully baked, so they can not even have a bakery department, just shove us all into the deli and then not even need bakery managers anymore. I've been told over and over again lately I should consider training to become a bakery manager. If this is whats happening, I don't see the point.

And that artisan bread doesn't sell anywhere. MAYBE in the marketplaces, but certainly not around here in my small town, and I highly doubt they do in downtown Dayton either.

We have an 8-door case devoted to artisan bread.  The Labrea sells better than the Private Selection, which doesn't sell at all unless we mark it down.  We  carry 2 each of over 30 types of artisan breads and rolls and we might sell 5 a day at the most.

So how's it been going so far since they've discontinued nearly everything?  They told us when they did it in Atlanta, their sales went up and their OSAT scores went up too.  I think they're lying.  The only reason the OSAT scores would go up is because they drove away the customers that would give them less than highly satisfied reviews.  They told us it would free up the bakers to wait on customers.  The bakers already wait on customers.  Besides, how many customers they think we have at 5 o'clock in the morning?  No, the real reason is so they can cut hours.  They're getting rid of anything that requires any skill or labor.

What a surprise... yet another "Customer 1st" imitative that is just the opposite, beneath the surface. Of course, we all know it's just yet another example in a long list of examples of "Bottom Line 1st" and "Corporate Bonuses 1st".

Keeping cutting and gutting your stores, corporate. It may mean more money in your ever-fattening pockets in the here and now, but it will catch up to you. Large, previously successful companies have fallen in the past and more will fall in the future, and Kroger can just as easily be one of those future, fallen companies.

Surprisingly most things people haven't complained about although people do complain that our regular french and italian bread selection is puny compared to Walmarts (well yeah, they discontinued all the cheesy breads a long time ago)

And our manager kind of kept ordering a couple things anyway... until our coordinator sees and throws a conniption fit that is.

Make sure you have phone numbers available for customers who complain.

They told us to tell the customers that we're streamlining everything to give our customers a better shopping experience.  Sorry, but I'm not going to lie for Kroger.  They told us when shoppers have too many choices, they gey confused as to what to buy and end up buying nothing.  That's funny, I've never heard of such a problem.  One person told them you're going to do whatever you want no matter what we think but don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining.
