Union Question
Permalink

A co-worker of mine was written up and suspended for not following the correct call in procedure. Apparently he called in the very early hours of the morning, and said he would not be in for work due to illness. The night crew manager said he would pass on the information to management. I was aware that he needed to call back to follow up, but here is my question.  As a result of this offense ( 2nd one in I believe 60 days) he was suspended for 3 days. Management said he would have to wait until next week to serve this suspension  because he was needed this week or the dairy would be shorthanded.  My question is this, does management have the ability to postpone this punishment or must be be done immediately after the offense and write up?

Thats a good question. If the night crew manager was the only one available at the time I would say that he shouldn't be suspended at all. Has he consulted with his union representative at all and no I don't think they can. A suspension is a suspension therefore it should be done that following week.

he should of asked for the managers PERSONAL cell phone numbers then. so you know, he can call when theyre sleeping so call out. it seems like they prefer that.

Not everyone is the same.  What makes you feel a little sick may make someone else feel like they are dying.  If you want to work when you are half dead fine.  But do not expect others to follow your unhealthy lifestyle.   I don't think anyone who calls in asks for your sympathy anyway so it's not like you are taking something from them just to show them who's boss LOL!

If he was written up, it should have said 3 day suspension on the form.  So technically it started the day he signed the write up.  Right?  I'd F with them.  I'd work the 3 days in dairy and when the manager tried to take me off the schedule I'd claim me some hours and tell him sorry, my suspension was last week LOL!

I'd spill some milk and give him something to cry about!

All of this.  I have come in on days where I probably shouldn't have, but it doesn't mean that they should do the same.

Thank you! Self-righteous martyrdom only pisses off your coworker's and boss. Seriously, most folks just want to go to work and get a paycheck, not deal with drama. After all, don't the customer's provide enough drama to last us all a lifetime?!

I don't recall being able to suspend a suspension like that, but at least in Central division, if you called in over night, you could leave a message that you were calling in for the next day, but you were supposed to call back and speak to a member of management at some point in the next day, unless there were very extenuating circumstances. You didn't have to call in before the shift, just at some point to talk to a member of management. The only case I had where that didn't happen and it was OK was where an employee's father was about to die halfway across the country, and they were flying to them. Naturally we let that one slide.

I don't know if that's policy where OP is, but there's always 3 sides to every story.
