Delta UFCW1529 contract
Permalink

The union has reached a tentative agreement with Kroger.   It will be voted on next week and surely passed.   I haven't seen it in writing, but I have heard a few key points from somebody who has.  Overall, I'm disappointed.  I was hoping for a lot more given the recent wage increases from competitors and obvious staffing problems across the board.

A couple of things to note:

A big issue on the chopping block was spousal insurance, this is staying.  Kroger wanted to give an undisclosed significant raise across the board in exchange for the removal of spousal insurance, union declined.

Wage increases will be in line with past contracts, less than inflation.   No minimum wage hike.  Topped out people will see a 0.20$ contract raise per year.  Newer employees will be shafted with raises(I haven't heard the details, just that it will be worse for newcomers, longer to get raises/top out etc).

Contract has shifted from 2 to 4 years.   This is bad, if inflation rates increase during this time period, workers will be SOL as the contract covers 4 years.

NO back pay.   Part of the insurance negotiation.   It will have been 6 months since it was supposed to have been finalized.   It would have been at least 200$ per topped out employee that is being lost out on.

Disappointed to say the least.

Maybe I'm not understanding this, but no increased raises for employees so that the employees that have a spouse can have their spouse insured?  Certainly sounds cheaper for Kroger.  I never wanted the insurance because I have BCBS from my husband's job, I just wanted better pay.  I can just see future hiring - oh, you're married?  Don't call us we'll call you.

Sounds like the union dues haven't paid off for anybody there. $0.20 increase in top out pay? A length of a presidential term? Kroger definitely won with thise one. I tried pulling up the 1529 website and all I got was "404 error: spine not found."

Yes.   Kroger wanted to give increased wages across the board in exchange for the removal of spousal insurance option.    However, they wanted the union to sign off on the idea it without giving a dollar amount, so the union declined.   The big deal here is since wages are not competitive now with wage hikes across multiple companies especially, insurance was the main reason for employees to stay.    Half the people I meet are, "I work here for the insurance" people.

I've heard that spousal insurance costs the company 5500$ per year for those that opt in.   This roughly amounts to a $2.50 an hour raise to compensate for full timers.   I really just think it should be an opt in kind of thing, raise the premiums due for those that want it, and give raises across the board as that would help the loads of people that work that don't utilize that option.

Union dues are already pretty high here.  $10.50 a week.
