I work in Drug/Gm and have been made to hang tags for our department. I have made it clear that I do not want to work those type of hours (usually 10p-6a or 12a-8a), but I am just told because no one else is fast enough or good enough at hanging them that I have to do it. Why should I be punished because I am good at a job? I suggest other employees to my Dept. Head but the Scan Coordinator just says she does not what to train anyone. My main issue is that they are usually putting me down as either off the day before or mostly I have to work 6a-2a the day before then turn around and be back at midnight. I am just feed up with this. Is there anyone that I need to speak with about finally getting something done about this.
Most contracts require open availability for full time members. I would speak to store management and see if they can have the Drug/GM manager schedule somebody else. At our store, there is competition for tag hanging hours, most like it since there are no customers, even though it requires being up at obscene hours.
I understand that full-timers are supposed to have open availability but we all no that's not true. The back-up drug/gm manager here is restricted to the point that she can not work before 8am in the morning, can not work past 4pm, can not work overnight, and the kicker is she has not worked a Sunday since becoming our back-up. How is she supposed to do her job to the fullest this way. We are right now resetting promo aisle for christmas, but do you think she is helping, NO (it's usually done in early morning before store opens) First she should not have even become the back up. They choose her over me when I have been in the Department my entire employment and she is one of those floater employees. The ones that can never make a department stick (was in Meat dept before moving to drug/gm). Just Venting!!!
technically the Scan Coordinator is suppose to have a team to hang all the tags. but it seems you do it on Drug GM hours? i would speak to store manager, or go to the union rep and tell that its not in your job description.
i hang tags as a team but im a front end employee. its ok but the hours do suck ass

You really need to talk to your union rep asap. I don't think they can make you do it. They can ask, but they shouldn't be able to force it on you. Until then I would hang those tags in all the wrong places. I'd be do tired to do the job properly. Tell them they need to rotate that position between all departments so everyone else has to work overnight. Why single out just one department? It's not Drug/GM's responsibility to hang tags.
Are you getting paid a premium for those hours or the same old low pay you usually get?
They should be receiving whatever night premium their specific contract dictates, for at least a portion of the hours worked. Here, there is only one scan coordinator, and the people that hang tags come from both the front end & drug/gm.
Here Drug GM and Grocery each have 2 people that hang tags. Meat, Produce, Deli, Bakery, Dairy, Frozen hang their own tags individually.
Interesting, are you in a Kroger store one of the stores under the Kroger umbrella? That would screw with ELMS hours tremendously if that were implemented with our current system.

Kroger store in Central division. Used to have a tag team do everything but that got phased out a couple of years ago. Basically they took the ELMS hours and distributed it to the individual departments. At first, the ELMS hours given were always screwed up, ie: given 2 hours to hang tags in ELMS yet have 6 hours of tags. Then some weeks it would give us 5 hours but we would actually only have 3 hours of tags. It has been a lot more accurate recently which makes it easier. Each department also makes there own signs. However it still seems to me we aren't actually given ELMS hours to make signs, just hang tags.
