Usually it either means that it is expired or it is from somewhere else and isn't in the system. 

If it's from somewhere else and not expired, use a store coupon code. If they are expired, decide what you want to do based off of how recently it expired, how much your supervisors would care, and whether or not you are willing to deal with a pissed off customer.
