I've noticed that overwhelmingly, the amount of people who order ham salad at the deli are all old people. Once in a while you see someone under 60 ordering it, but not often. Whenever an older person walks up to the chef case I know that they're going to be ordering ham salad and more often than not I'm right.
I just thought it was kind of interesting. I never thought of ham salad as an old person thing until I worked at the deli.
I don't think it's an old people thing. I just think that younger people are more likely to buy what's trendy rather than stuff that's been around for ages. People tend to like the stuff they grew up on. For example, I grew up in the 70s and 80s. The music I like comes from that era. Any music I buy is from that time period. I'm sure there are a few good songs out today but I have no desire to purchase them because I already know what I like.

I've never even seen ham salad in my area. I grew up on it in the late 50's, and 60's. Don't think I would eat it today. Same as jello. Yuck!
I've noticed the same thing with chopped ham and P and P loaf. If someone under 60 is doing the order, it's usually for their parents.
Oh, pickle and pimento lunchmeat? I would definitely still eat that. On white bread too! LOL! Heck, I remember when pop tarts came out. It was a BIG DEAL! But then again, I also remember when a lot of things came out. Like blow dryers, pantyhose, cassette tapes lol! Can't really say "those were the good ole days". But the music was good!
It's the same thing with "boiled ham". Every person who asks for boiled ham seems to be over 70. These same customers constantly confuse us with the meat department, and ask us for ground beef. When we tell them that its at the meat department, they act totally confused.
Yeah, I noticed the boiled ham thing. I remember when I first started and a customer asked for "boiled ham" and I was confused. Then they would point to the Polish ham and I got it.
A lot of em loved their Krakus, but a lot of Krogers are switching to Boar's Head, so the pickings for Krakus in a Kroger store are getting slimmer.
I'm guessing they get ham salad because its soft, easy to chew and swallow.
What gets me is that when they buy a LARGE quantity and say with a creepy grin, "I love ham salad." Ummm... Eeww?
Food doesn't have to be bland, boring, dumbed-down, and tasting of a chemistry set.
For an interesting ham salad, think black olives, pickled hot chiles, ripe avocado (subbing for half the mayonnaise), copious amounts of black pepper, and an appealing wheat beer.
