First day is tomorrow and I have some questions.

I went to new hire orientation last Saturday and I'm starting as a courtesy clerk at Ralph's tomorrow. I'm 16 years old and live in California.

Questions

1. I don't want to join the union because the advise I got off this forum and have been told I don't have to join or pay dues because I'm under 18 but at orientation the person said to the group that everyone has to join the union within 90 days or you will be suspended. Is this true and if it's not is there a company, union, state(California), or national law that prevents people under 18 from being forced into a union ?

2.How long will it take to get better at bagging?  At orientation we got to bag groceries but I felt that I was really bad at it. Is there any tips you have on how to bag better?

3. How do I get more uniform shirts?

4. When you sweep the store is the mop/brow thing actually sweeping anything or is it just to check the store for spills and debris?

5.How do you clock in on the kronos time clock?

Thanks for helping me out.

I always recommend joining the union for a number of reasons. When you have a high percentage of membership it can help in negotiating our contracts. In closed shop states you have to join the union.

Management should provide you with a shirt and it takes time to get better, but more importantly be more productive than your peers. Dont stand around and talk. Store sweeps is with a broom, but may need to mop up spills. Kronos you just hit punch in, enter your number and scan your finger.

Is this true and if it's not is there a company, union, state(California), or national law that prevents people under 18 from being forced into a union ?  You have 90 days to decide.  Get to know your co workers and after a week or two ask them.  I do not know how California is so maybe you do have to join the union no matter what.  You have to follow California rules.  Here, that would be a threat.  I have been in the union since my first day.  I haven't had a need for them to defend me.  But, I realize I would still be making minimum wage after 8 years without the union.  For young kids.  They have to work 2 hours a week to pay the weekly due.  They do not benefit pay wise from it.  Here, CCs get one raise and that is it. That doesn't make sense to me.  If you want to make a career out of Kroger, join the union after you are promoted higher than a CC.

2.How long will it take to get better at bagging?  At orientation we got to bag groceries but I felt that I was really bad at it. Is there any tips you have on how to bag better?  With lots of practice, you will get much better and faster.  Don't worry.  You will learn.

3. How do I get more uniform shirts?  Ask a store manager after you have been there 3 weeks.  They do not like giving extra uniforms to new people that might quit after a few days.

4. When you sweep the store is the mop/brow thing actually sweeping anything or is it just to check the store for spills and debris?  You will be sweeping sand and garbage.  It also gives you an opportunity to clean up spills and straighten anything that isn't right.  Carry a couple of paper towels with you so you can take care of the small spills on the spot.  One of the other posters will give you tips on how to deal with a turd in the middle of the aisle.  Some people that use the bathrooms are disgusting.  Good luck if you have to clean them.

5.How do you clock in on the kronos time clock?  You will be shown on your first day.  If it is the same system we use, they will need to input your finger print into the system.  You might have to write your hours in the time clock correction book until they have you fully in the system.  I like to keep track of my hours at home on a spreadsheet.

Thanks for helping me out.

Congrats on the job and getting thru the baffling hiring portal process.

You will do just fine.  Smile and be courteous.

California is a union-mandatory state unfortunately. So yes, you do have to join the union.
