What in the world is the policy as far as phones on the floor?

I've never been told what in the world it was because they canceled orientation and I've heard nothing about it being rescheduled. I was pretty much trying to do some last min tidying up ( although it didn't really need I'm just a neat freak like that) and I got an emergency call regarding my child being rushed to the hospital, now I know I'm still on the clock and maybe I could've went around the corner and called but I was in state of shock cause my son never been rushed to the hospital for anything. So I just was holding my phone in my hand cause my mother mode kicked it. I wasn't talking on the phone I was just simply holding it and one of the managers saw me and was like " what does the manual say about being on  phone while on the floor?! do you know any of the stuff you signed?!" which I truly don't cause I'm really new... So i said the best answer I could think of and that seemed reasonable which was " your not suppose to be on them while on the floor" and he goes to say " when do you come again?" So i told him when and he says " well we will just see you then" and walked off. Now I did tell him I had an emergency but he didn't seem to care at all, so I'm worriee bout what's gonna happen and frustrated cause I didn't really do anything wrong. I even apologized for it and everything once I finally clocked out. So can somebody tell me what's the rule on that, it'll be great so I won't cross paths with him again.

I hope your child is well.

Employee Handbook page 30, version 2-2011:

"Prohibited items on the sales floor and work areas:

To better assist our customers, the following items are prohibited on the sales floor and/or work areas.

Purses,  Wallets, Electronic devices, Cellular phones, Ipods or MP# players, Video games, Food or beverages(including water and any unpaid items).

All of the above should be placed in assigned lockers.  Failure to follow the above policy will result in a Significant Incident Reminder(SIR) pending Constructive advice and discharge for repeated occurences."

Phone Calls, page 27:

".....In addition, personal cell phones or electronic communication devices are not to be used by associates while they are on the clock."

Ask for an Employee handbook.  Common sense dictates that we are not supposed to be making or receiving calls while on the clock.

The manager might forget about it or you might get a SIR.  If you are still on probation, it might get dicey.  Emergency calls are to be made to the store phone if someone needs to get ahold of you.

Basically you're supposed to keep them in your locker.

Although, when I was still working there, everyone in my department had their phone on their person. No one said anything about it.

I can't really comment on your situation except I would say your Kroger store is perhaps more strict........ that is, "by the book" (whatever that hypothetical book is).

At my Kroger, I have complained over and over to various employees INCLUDING store managers about the fact that many employees continue to:  Text, surf online, scroll their  Facebook feed, read text messages, look at digital pictures, show each other FB posts, and in general- dilly-dally w/ their Smartphones WHILE THEY ARE DEFINITELY ON THE CLOCK!!  Primarily employees in meat, produce, deli, bakery, frozen, drug GM that are not (at the time) directly interacting with customers.  NO one in authority seems to really care, and it goes from the bottom all the way to the TOP within the store. It seems no one is willing to 'crack down' on it because so many "in charge" employees are guilty of doing exactly the same thing.

When I was hired, in my paperwork was included the rule that "No one was to be engaged on cellphones, pagers or mobile phones of any kind while clocked in!!" (paraphrased). (Of course I understand that some definitely Business-related conversations may be excluded from that rule).

So, I would like to hear some feedback on all you employees at other Kroger stores around the country where this kind of behavior is either widespread, rare, or tolerated, encouraged, discouraged, prohibited, or whatever!! ??

In my store, the official rule was no phones on the floor, in practice, it was "don't let any manager/office person see it".

At the same time, most of the office people would use theirs any time they didn't have any customers in front of them. They gave reasons, such as "oh I'm making sure it's not going to rain soon so I know how many people need to be working on carts", but 99% of the time they were just playing with them.

I've been shopping in the store for years and I've seen all managers on their phone and Facebook. They'll be in the back calling home or their significant others talking about other employees.

Everybody at my store carries their phones in their pockets. Nobody says a word about it. I even see management using their phones while on the clock. Hell, I'll sometimes check mine real quick while I'm on carts by hiding in a corner or at the back of the parking lot.

What's the policy? Don't use em while you're on the clock and on the job. Any where. on any job. In any company. In fact, you're not supposed to even have one on your person while at work. HOWEVER...............

Because we live in a tits--over--taters guns gone wild world, everyone needs to have un restricted access to a phone in case of, well, just such afore described emergencies. S'why we also got grade school kids with em in the class rooms.

But yeah: use common sense and don't be one of the auto-bot zombie twaghtz shuffling along glued to their screens.

I work in produce at my store and while two of our co-managers try to enforce it, our whole crew has earbuds routed through our shirts and we wear them while in the prep room. Nobody besides the two cos care as long as we take them out and like tuck them in our collar or something when we head back out on the sales floor. And phones? They just ask we be discreet and quick with what we're doing. Got a call? Take it outside and look like you're on break or step in the prep room or "hallway" on the other side of the cooler. We've had no complaints so our store manager doesnt care as long as we do our jobs in front of the customers and don't mess around in the back too long. Long story short, there's a policy but not many people care in my store.

Our employee handbook says phones can be used in an emergency only away from customers.  I was caught twice by managers on my phone and I just mouthed "family emergency" and they never said a word to me about it.  And it was an emergency both times.

Yeah, not a soul keeps their wallet/phone in a locker at my store. Because that is stupid.

Some employees have their phones sticking out their ass pockets, looks tacky as hell. One manager is anti-phone, but others are cool about it. The wallet makes no sense. So according to the rules, you would have to clock out, go get wallet, then come back to buy a snack for a break?

@_@

During a rush, that could actually mean spending 2/3 of a break not relaxing.

I NEVER keep my phone in my locker. EVER. Its on my person at ALL times. Being as NOBODY really answers the phone where I work (50+ rings before it's picked up, then you're put on hold for 5 min before it decides to disconnect itself and you have to start all over again, personal experience when I called in)

if someone needs to get me, they have my number
