Front End Backup
Permalink

I'm currently a floor supervisor, and have been for a few months. My next goal is to become the front end backup (ACSM in region). I would like some pointers to get there. Also, does anyone know when the programs for 2016 are starting in the southwest division?

Former Front End ADH here.  Worked in the SW Division.

You need to have a good rapport with members of management.  You do that by not being a pain in their ass:  make sure they don't have to constantly check and see if the lot is clear, don't call them up to the front to assist customers with problems you can take care of yourself, stay on top of QueueVision and don't constantly call them to the front for surge help if you can avoid it.  If you can instill in your store manager a sense of confidence in your abilities, to the point where they feel like they don't have to worry as much about the Front End while you're on shift, you are at a huge advantage.

If your store manager  is an ******* or just plain doesn't like you, consider transferring.  Also, try to make sure your district's Front End Coordinator likes you and knows you have a reputation for excellence.  If your store manager and FE coordinator like you and want you to advance in the company, then you will.

Try to learn as much as you can about every facet of the Front End.  I went from cashier to ADH in a little over a year, and in that time I learned how to do Service Desk, File Maintenance (gag) and Cash Office.  I also was my store's SRS (payroll) for awhile.  By the time I left Kroger, I could step into any roll on the FE, from courtesy clerk to CSM, and do the job, which was pretty cool.

Also, if you're trying to catch management's attention, you want to be the guy that is always willing to come in if someone calls in sick, or will stay for 10+ hours in File Maintenance because there's a tag audit in the morning and you gotta spend all night scanning tags.  Things like that, while they blow ass in the present because you feel like you're giving up your life for a job that pays barely more than a cashier, will eventually get you noticed.

Also, instead of gunning straight for the ADH program, consider applying for level 4 positions as they open up in your district.  File Lead is a level 4 position in the Front End that pays almost as well as a backup, though it's pretty boring and tedious.  Be willing to transfer if you don't feel things in your store are moving how you'd like.

TL;DR -- Sell your soul to your Kroger overlords.  Bow down and give worship.

Good luck.

ROLE not roll.  Sorry for my egregious spelling error, I only have an English degree. :(
