Can someone please help me understand these Kroger paystubs?

Why does it list regular hours, night premium hours and sunday hours as different categories? The pay rates are exactly the same, except for it shows the fifty centy night premium. Added together, the hours exceed how many hours I actually worked. This happens every paycheck. I normally don't care, but i'm trying to figure out my earnings and some accountinf stuff now that I changed my w-4 to no federal withholding.

Don't do it.

I've seen the recent trend of people playing this game, or claiming bogus dependents, or both.......basically, you'd almost be better off drug dealing for extra money than fkin around with the IRS like this. Oh, I know somebody or more's gonna come right after me and point out how and why I'm wrong about all of this--------but at least look into it.

Do some serious research first.

Well I don't make enough money to pay federal income tax. I was slated to get a 1200 dollar refund, but the treasury department is offsetting my entire refund because of a debt I owe to them. So I'm not going to pay them money I don't have just to get my entire refund taken from me at the end of the year. I barely survive on these terrible Kroger wages as is.

The IRS will get any money from you that they want.  You are playing with fire if you think changing Federal withholding to $0 will stop them.

The Treasury Department confiscated your refund because you owe back child support or you owe back Income taxes.  Those are the only two debts that I know can do that.  I have read of Social Security being garnished for child support.  So, you will pay eventually and it will be more painful then.

Out of curiosity, what did you owe the Treasury Department for?  Is it an error?

If you paid $1700 w/h during the year and would have gotten a $1200 refund, then you did pay $500 in taxes.  So, If you pay 0, then you might owe $500 next year.  If you change the w/h amount, it is to make sure you don't owe anything at the end of the year and don't get a refund.

Sunday pay is any hours worked on Sunday from 12:01am until 11:59pm.  It is an old, old contract thing here.  They can claim 8 hours overtime on Sunday and work 40 hours the rest of the week.  I get an extra $2 for Sunday premium.

When you add hours, you want to add Regular hours to Sunday pay and Sixth Day pay(if applicable).  You do not want to add night premium to the hours.

Night premium is hours worked from 12:01am until 5:30 am on our contract.  If most of our hours are worked during that time, then we are supposed to get night premium pay for all hours worked during the week.

I do not recommend drug dealing...

At least tax cheats go to fancy federal jails.  Drug dealers end up in over crowded not so fancy jails.  And risk being shot before they get there.

A debt to the department of defense that I didn't know I even owed, but was sent to collections anyway. It didn't even show up on my credit report. The only thing on there are school loans, and I have filed a forbearance for those.

I made less than 10,000 dollars last year so that's why I got such a refund, not to mention the EIC. And I just did the calculator on the IRS website, and I have already overpaid by 66 dollars this year if my income stays consistent and have no further withholding.

Yah, the Department of Defense makes this more complicated.  I hope you didn't ruin a fighter jet ...You need to investigate what this debt is for.  Make sure it is actually your debt.  It will follow you forever with interest.  Only thing I can see is the debt is for some type of GI student loans?  Student loans, child support and tax debts can not be filed for in bankruptcy.

I know working for Kroger the first 4 years was hard for me.  Since then, I have been debt free and making a decent living.  Anyone hired under the latest contracts aren't going to fare as well unless the contracts change to better.  Your best option is to find better paying jobs.  Best of luck.

The regular hours and Sunday hours should add up to what you actually worked. People who have been with the company a long time get paid more on Sundays, so it's a separate category for all. Night premium is just a bonus on top of hours worked.

You can choose 0 withholding.  It's not a game and it's perfectly legal.  Why let the IRS use your money interest free?  It's your money.  I doubt you've actually "seen" anybody who has "played this game" unless they are some low life friends of yours.  You don't have access to anyone's tax returns unless you know them personally.

If you owe the DoD you need to call DFAS and find out what it is and how much you owe. I owed on my STAR card when I got out, and they took my first full refund and half of this latest one of to pay it back. Get it figured out so you can plan ahead. Owing the DoD is going to be a huge thorn in your side.

I have always claimed single 0. I pay more through the year but I always get a nice return. I did the math and while I lose a bit more money in total by paying single 0 taxes, it's worth the hassle free taxes at the beginning of the year. I ALWAYS get a return and have not once ever owed the IRS money.

Claiming 0 withholding all year is a terrible idea. If you are making less than 20k a year, and end up owing the IRS 1k in taxes, how do you plan on paying it? The IRS can and will garnish your pay. Save yourself the headache.

Also to answer your question. Pay stubs are just wierd. They have to account for everything, even if it doesn't change the actual pay. You should see my paystub when I take vacation....it's got about 5 extra lines that are all sorts of wierd to read.

Really don't give a damn what you choose to believe or do; tho it would be snicker-able to watch you get audited!

I don't fear an audit.  I have nothing to hide.  I just stated a fact about withholding, I never gave tax advice like you are trying to do.  I understand that every person's tax situation is different.  And you can't "watch" someone get audited, idiot.

Ya it's not the end of the world to not withhold federal taxes. I know that I will make less tHan $6300 which is the standard deduction for federal taxes. Therefore I have no federal taxes. I'd rather keep the money than have the federal government bold onto it for a year interest free.

I have no idea what everyone in this thread is talking about.  Most of the replies don't even seem relevant to your actual question.

those different categories on your stub are just to show you how much you made during those times.  Your night premium, for instance, just shows how many of your hours were "night hours" and were paid a premium.  I'll usually get like 4-5 "night" hours per week, which amounts to an extra $2-3 on my paycheck.  It's not much, but it is SOMETHING.  I think night hours are between 11pm and 6am.  I'll often come in at 5am, so I'll get 50 cents for that first hour.  Sundays work the same way, except you'll find differences between employees' rates on Sundays.  People who have been there a long time get time and a half (why those people don't work EVERY sunday is beyond me....working an 8 hour shift for them would pay them for 12 hours, I'd be there every sunday!!)

As for your question, just look at your regular earning hours and you sunday pay hours.  Those should add up to the total actual hours you worked.  The "legal holiday"  "night premium"  "sunday premium", etc are just times when you were paid a premium for those specific times.  THe stub basically breaks it down to show you how many premium hours you were paid for and what the total ($) of those hours were.  If you have 32 hours under regular earning and 8 under sunday pay, then you should add up to 40 hours.

It was easy to understand and follow until Nocturnia started up with his(her?) usual ranting and raving.  Ever since Nocturnia got fired from Walmart it seems there isn't anything for it to do except drink drug and rage on a Kroger forum.

If you have been on this forum for any lenght of time you would know Nocutrnia used to work for Walmart.  In fact, I think Nocturnia just posted recently when he quit Walmart.  He actually used to have some helpful things to say and came across as intelligent.  Lately though......... wow.  Seems like it's just a place for him to spew nonsensical hate.
