heard rumors that Kroger or management may try to force 30 year people to work late shifts. I hope not because I am one of the 30 year people. I have always had to work my way up the seniority ladder and just when I think I have finally made the early hours I get screwed. I do not think Kroger can do that but Kroger has changed a lot and the union is not the same. If that does ever changed I will retire a year early than I had planned to retire. I am just tired of the bull crap at Kroger. It never was like this at Kroger when I first started for Kroger. Kroger was a nice place to work then thirty years ago but then some idiots got into corporate a few years ago and screwed everything.
I can understand where you're coming from. After that long, you should pretty much get what you want, within reason. Our dept heads and backups all work at least 1 night which is usually til 9pm. It's just the way it is...if you don't like it, step down! I don't really have room to talk however, I get almost all early shifts. But to agree with you,, yes, it should go by seniority.
i have 2 yr senority and i keep getting stuck with early shifts now. I HATE IT. I prefer night shifts. Only the lazy *******s work early shifts and it makes me have to work twice as hard. i had to bag while running self check out the other day (its somewhat busy store) and another day i ran self check out and on a big lane with one bagger who always walks around the store because he's "been here 15 years so hes better than the high schoolers"
ive had my problems with night shift as well but its much easier to rely on people who have less seniority in my opinion cause they still give a crap.
Our department heads are union. Our contract states that you can claim an earlier work shift if you have seniority. So I'm not sure how they could force a department head to work late if he/she didn't want to.
They tried this two years ago...35 year kroger guy told them to kiss his ass. They never asked again. YMMV since he does that basically every day to management.

The old timers may have this in their contract but a lot of the newer contracts say that you have to take full week schedules. It sucks and limits our ability to cherry-pick the good shifts. :(

There's only one contract in my area. What is written in the contract is valid until the expiration of that contract and a new contract is negotiated. The one I was referring to was the current one for my area.
This business of getting the best of everything simply because you've been there the longest is bullsh!t. It's too much like politicians without term limits; there's no reason to do anything when it's all being handed to you any way.
So I'm not gonna cry if they some union douche has to eat cheese burgers instead of prime rib.

I bet you would change your tune if you were there 20 years or more and didn't get the shifts you wanted. You must be ones of those people who feel they shouldn't have to put in their time to get the rewards. Typical Liberal attitude.

I love your attitude! It will serve you well in your life! It's nice to know when you are being passed over time and time again for a promotion, no raises, that you will think everything is okey dokey. You will continue to work harder than the rest each day, without appropriate compensation or recognition. Enjoy your cheeseburgers. May you live a long life.
Virtually everyone full time in my store has to close once a week. Some people halfway circumvent this by working 4am to 1pm, which technically counts as a third shift. That's not true second shift; that's more of an intersection of third and first.

Well, I earn my pay instead of skating by being a lazy free loader..........is that what you meant? No?

Copy that 100%. I'm old enough I remember when unions = everything that made USA great!! It's all turned into this stubborn, uncompromising, arms crossed-scowled faced fraternity of self centered ass holes who care NOTHING about the American worker and want only every perk they can get for putting in the least amount of work.
I hate to sound like a lazy, entitled crybaby, but I love my 8 to 4. I worked my ass off to get it, too.
My store turns super ghetto and rednecky after 5pm... f#$% that noise
Dude, you are seriously one of the maybe 4 people on here who's super cool. Wish I could see more posts from you!
So true. But I will stop at that. Don't want his head to get as big as his hat lol!
Thanks... and no, I don't have much of an ego, so no worries there. I work for Kroger, ya know.
I didn't think that, I really was just teasing you! I need to find that SNL skit on Youtube with Burt Reynolds lol! It's right up there with Jim Carey doing Matthew McConahey. (Or however you spell his name)
I've worked opening uscan (6a-230) a few times and I didn't like it. I always preferred my late shift 530p-2a twice a week and my 2 midnights for tags.
I think newcomers not getting early shifts should be an incentive NOT to stay for a company like Kroger that doesn't have too big of a future if you're not interested in middle management.

Putting in your time means nothing. What matters is your work NOW. It's retail; there's metrics so what are you accomplishing? Are you a lazy POS 48 hour AA sitting on your ass every day when ELMS calls for less than 28 hours for that job? They fight with every front end manager. I don't understand these people who always find a way not to "close" even if the district your in says you must close at least once a week. Had a manager that wouldn't work past 6pm on the front end. Seriously? I can't leave before 8pm from mine.
Now I totally get it because once you hit "top pay" unless you want to be in the shooting gallery that is dept management, there's no where to go for better pay. Even dept heads... where do they go? MD1 training? A training center? Eh...
The newer contracts make it less and less desirable to move up or stay with the company. Vacations take longer and longer to earn and cap out at 3 weeks in ATL division. Pay increases at top rate are maybe fifteen cents per year.
