Yes, they can. It is up to you to grieve it and get the union to fight for your job back. If you signed the exit papers, very doubtful the union can help you.
Did you get terminated? Did the store manager give a reason why you were terminated? A regular employee can't fire you. A store manager or co manager must fire you.
Immediate termination includes but not limited to:
Stealing.
Taking unauthorized breaks.
Sleeping on the job.
Fighting with other employees.
Fighting with customers.
Fighting with store manager.
Poor attendance.
Leaving before the end of your shift without telling anyone.
Store director is a term used by Meijer employees. Kroger calls them store managers.

In some states you can be fired for any reason. The boss doesn't like your white shoes for example.
With the union, if you have been wrongly terminated and haven't signed the exit papers, then the union can try to fight for the persons job back. I don't know what the OP was asking. Generally, a store manager will give a reason for termination.
I wouldn't care if you were anti social with coworkers. As long as you are doing your job, I doubt the store manager cares either. BUT, you need to speak with customers. Say hi and offer to help. There has been a suggestion we can be fired for not being friendly. Acknowledge, Assist, Appreciate.
Lets put it this way, they can fire you for ANYTHING and will make it match up with something in the contract. If you decide to fight it, they know you will end up at a different store or you will just give up.Either way they are done with you.
I got fired with no warning at ALL. See I was beating off in the dairy cooler and dropping McNugg Nuggs in the deli chicken tenders and shooting zit juice all over the bath room mirror and I'd been doing it for over a year and no probs. Then BANG just fired can they do that?????
