New Cashier

I've done my cashier training and had 30 mins live on the tills yesterday in training. Today I'm on the floor on my store and wondered if there's any advice or tips I should learn?

Also do I ask my manager for the 3 letter/password combo so I can access a register?

Ask your FES for your checker number and password. Some tips:

Don't worry about being fast, focus on accuracy. Speed will come with time.

To void the last item: void-enter

To void any item: void-scan the item

To void the entire transaction: void-total

To split the total cost between two credit/debit cards: key in the amount to put on the first card, then hit EFT. Or if the customer wants to pay some in cash and the rest with a card, key in the amount of cash they want to use, hit cash, then hit EFT and the rest will be charged to their card.

If an item won't scan, key in the barcode number (UPC code) but leave off the last digit.

Code for coupons that won't work: 53380-key in the discount for the coupon

Always scan the customer's loyalty card/input their alt ID before scanning coupons.

Many discounts from having a loyalty card will not come off until you hit total.

If you're ever in doubt about carding someone for alcohol/tobacco, card them.

Learn the policy for price overrides at your store. Some stores will allow cashiers to override a price without manager approval if it's within a few dollars of the price the computer comes up with (e.g. an item scans as 7.99 and the customer says it's 5.99), some will not. Make sure you scan the customer's loyalty card first, but if you still need to change a price: key in new price-price override-scan the item-8 for "make it right".

If a customer is buying gift cards, give them back to the customer as soon as you activate them so they don't get lost in bags of groceries.

I disagree about giving the gift cards back to the customer after they are activated-----in our store we only give the cards back to the customer after the customer has paid for his order. Several incidents here in this area of cards being activated, cards given back to the customer and they take off without paying (if they have no other grocery items.)
