so when I apply i said I'm not available because of a religious event. However due to this week being a week for holidays I'm supposed to give away that unavailable time, which I will admit this week it is cancelled but the event I'm going to is almost $200 a pop and the person who bought them needs to be watched around any and all beer because of liver failure. so what am I supposed to do say sorry you dying man your gonna be going to it alone because my work cant spare me for one day? is this allowed is what I want to know not what someone thinks. sorry if that sounds rude I just need to know if I can fight for this using rules that are in place.
KROGER DOES NOT TAKE PRIORITY OVER PERSONAL EVENTS OR ISSUES THAT MAY RENDER YOUR WORK DAY UNAVAILABLE
IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING IMPORTANT OR UNFORESEEN COME UP, JUST TALK TO YOUR STORE MANAGER ABOUT IT. SKIP THE DEPARTMENT HEADS, CO-MANAGERS, AND BACKSEAT MANAGERS. They cannot help you very much and their opinions do not reign over store manager's.
KROGER IS USED TO PEOPLE TO CALLING IN AND BEING NO CALL NO SHOW W/ LIMITED AVAILABILITY SO TRUST US WHEN WE SAY NOBODY WILL CARE THAT MUCH.
Holidays are the busiest times for grocery stores. Crunch time. When everybody is at home cooking, enjoying time with families or at parties, that's when we work the hardest. Sorry to say, but if this is a deal breaker, maybe a job in different industry would be better for you.
Oh, and business needs of Kroger trump needs of individual workers.

If your availability is approved and your availability states that you're unavailable a certain day/time, then they aren't allowed to schedule you. If they do, then it's typically a violation of the union contract and supposedly the union will get any write-up that management tries to throw your way tossed out if you refuse to work the shift that goes against your availability.
Thing is, if you're still in your probationary period, management can just terminate you and the union can't do anything.
Thing is too, if you're not in the union, then the union is less likely to back you up.
Sometimes, even when you're in the union and in the right, management still wins because the union doesn't always do the right thing.
What should be cut and dry isn't always just that when dealing with Kroger and the union.
Don't let them know your religious event has been canceled. It's NOT their business and they have NO NEED to know. Period. They can make do without you.
If you have let them know it's been cancelled then all I can say is do what you feel
Is right
