It makes me look bad!

When first shift can't take the time to sweep floors, clean slicers, wipe tables and counters, and do some dishes, it makes second shift look they aren't doing their job. In actuality second shift is doing double the work. I had to wash every spoon we have and all first shifts dishes last night, help bakery out (cause no one was in bakery to take care of customers), and do my list if duties. It didn't get done perfectly (last night). It drives me crazy when I work my butt off, but you can't tell. It makes me look bad!!!

I feel for you, as I worked in deli for over two years, and it was like that on many occasions.  First of all, Kroger doesn't want to allow enough hours for all the work to be done (their ELMS or E-schedule is total bull****)  and on top of that, if you have workers who want to constantly do the least possible and just get by, it will happen. Some deli workers are simply VERY unorganized, sloppy, and absentminded (as well as too talkative with fellow workers) and this compounds the problem we already have of  the abysmal 'skeleton crew' hours given to the dept.

Good luck, so have you discussed this with your supervisor? It may not do a lot of good, but at least you should speak out, and  make sure your deli lead knows where you stand. If you say absolutely nothing, the deli leads can assume (or pretend) that everything is just hunky-dory and you are OK with it!

I've disgust it with managers above them and whenever I work with my department head I bring up bits and pieces, but I rarely have the time to talk with them. I'm always busy picking up slack from others. I think that's where I made my mistake, showing them that I will work hard and will do the dirty work to get my job done. It's being taken advantage of now.

I once had a department head tell me during my PED that I "pick up a lot of the slack around here" and while that was indeed a compliment, I so, so wanted to say, "why should I have to in the first place? Why not hold people accountable?" but I chose to hold my tongue because I knew my words would fall on deaf ears and the conversation would go no where. That's one of the reasons I eventually transferred not only to a different store, but a different department as well, and I've been so much happier since. It's true, you know... management/department heads look for the best workers and once they spot them, throw 10x the work on their shoulders in order to make up for the employees that aren't even doing a half or a third of the work that they're supposed to be doing. It's royally messed up and if you're in a situation like that, it's best to get out of it ASAP because it only wears you down more and more as time goes on.

Preach! I swear I feel the same way more times than not. Even got to the point where I flat out told my dad one time that at times they make being a good employee that is actually doing their job, a bad thing at times. Cause for all you do, the less they see or appreciate at times. And if they do see you being on top of things, they want you to be more accountable for everything else. Which is beyond wrong.

Haha, I was thinking you meant that as well. Cause I know I've been rather disgusted myself with the non-discussions also at my store lol.

LOL, we are Kroger Kindred spirits in here! I haven't made a bale either before. And I know the directions are on the side of the thing and I should learn. But dude as is, we barely get time enough to run trash out during the day. And when you do, have to wait til they call blue line or even find a manager that has a key to open things up. So when I finally get back there to take out trash at some point, I ALWAYS cross my fingers that it's not so full I have to make a bale. As I can barely work the hand jacks(manual or otherwise to get truck in the mornings) for what they are meant for, let alone trying to figure out how bind up the bale and get it on the truck properly and get back to my dept. on time. I'd freaking be there all damn day doing it if I had to figure it out on my own(especially as the peeps at my store usually know how to do do the damn thing, but nobody really offers to help unless it really looks like you are going to block their way or it could become potentially dangerous. But otherwise they are just sitting back chillen and telling you what you could do versus lending a hand. But wait that is the "team spirit" at play again), lol.

Well, I just learnt something new. I didn't know the instructions were on it. Yeah you're right it would take up a lot of time doing it yourself. I wouldn't have the time either beings I'm always picking up the slack of others, just to get the my job done.

Been there.  I came into my Market Place the other night.  Both balers were full.  I changed them.  I also wrap the blue totes and put them on the salvage trailer.  No one seems to have time to do either task.  It was a double truck so I had everyone load one baler to see if we could fill it again before we leave.  Only got 3/4 full.

I actually enjoy changing the balers.  I have it down to a 5 minute task if everyone stays out of the way.  My best has been changing the baler 3 times during a 10 hr shift.  I would have changed it a 4th if I had worked another hour during a 12 hour shift.

It annoys me when I see 3 people taking 15 minutes to change a bale.  Circle jerking at its finest.  I get really annoyed when someone says, "it is not my day".

Actually just found this- http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Cardboard-Bale/?ALLSTEPS which I think it sort of makes it seem a bit easier to understand how to do it. But again if they learned how to pick up enough slack and likely wouldn't freak out about why isn't their #1 floor filler out on the floor doing her job( *cough* me *cough*), then I could foresee having enough time to actually do it more often. But knowing my luck if I was even back there trying to make one my DH would be like what in the hell are you doing? We need to get these holes filled ASAP!

Although I do think, to keep it fair they should rotate which departments have to do it each week. So everyone gets a turn at it, and at least folks can learn how to do it and not the same people being stuck with it. But again, "team" work ain't the Kroger way, so I doubt it would happen that way, like EVER.

I know my night lead trained me in bailing just because of what I do as Utility during night shift if I am working nights, mostly because I have a pre-closing routine and he knew I was dependable. (If I am the last UC above 18 for the night and our closer UC is a minor, I mostly will run all store garbage, get paper an plastic done, and will try to get liquor poles set up in addition to carts / cleaning / bagging. This is so the closer does not have a lot on their plate to deal with as most times it's either an hour or so before we must stop working due to our contract that the closer is left alone)

It's not that hard and even if I still don't tie as well as my night lead did, I still do my best at it and my bales are no different then the rest, just tying the stupid metal bailing wire that we use is f'ing ridiculous sometimes if I cant get a solid grip to keep it almost tight around the bale when tying so it doesn't snap when I eject it.)
