Overnight Crew Riding The Clock For More OT
Permalink

Does anyone else have this problem?  A guy that's been there for 15 years rides the clock ( goes slow the whole night ) just for over-time and waits for other faster stockers to help him.  Can he be written up for this?  I've done all my isles by 6 o clock and yet THIS guy always needs help.  I've done his isles and always got out on-time.  Than they always threaten me to stay.

Why not just do your aisles? That way this guy will be exposed for going slow and not getting his aisles done. That's what I do when I work night crew. Threaten you to stay? Store manager threatening you or your night supervisor threatening you to stay?

Sounds to me like they're getting use to you bailing this guy out. If you can avoid it, don't. Don't help this guy and let him do his own aisles.

How old is the guy?  Unfortunately, a 60 yo can't crank thru the work a 30 yo can.  I get ticked when I run circles around coworkers half my age.  All they do is whine and pout about how much work they have.

I am lucky that I have a full crew on nights.  I do assign aisles.  I move people around to help others at the end to get everything done.  I do not let anyone get OT except me and my back-up per store management only if absolutely needed.

I have a 65 yo and a 60 yo on my crew.  They don't call in on me and don't stand around yapping while I am not in sight.  I do not like babysitting.  Also, the 60 yo is the only one that has any common sense to do things right without me having to hold his hand.  The 65 yo is just there to get away from his wife....

In short...no. nobody cares.  Half the crew at my store is like this.  They'll just keep pushing those who actuallt work and let the others slide.

The guy ain't 60 at all.  I can understand older guys, I help them out if needed.  But this guy is only 8 years older than me ( I'm 30 ).  There use to be a woman who's 42 that cleared the isles very quickly, even faster than me sometimes and never got overtime.  They always say," You have to stay. "  But when my isle has a lot ( sometimes It happens ), they don't stay at all and always leave.  I haven never complained in my 5 years of working there.  Guess it is what it is - shrugs -.

Depending on how technical you want to get, you can look at your contract.

I can make people stay 2 hours over mandatorily if I tell them 1 hour before the end of their shift.  I rarely have done this.  Your contract might be different.

I suggest take the money and try to ignore what the other guy is doing.  Some people will never be able to pick up the pace.  It is up to the night manager to get the person motivated.  The night manager gets bitched at by the store manager.  As long as you are doing what you are supposed to be doing, you don't have much to worry about.

I used to work with one 22 yo that would spend the entire shift running pet food.  What a joke.  He would run maybe 120 cases and I would be running the canned aisle with 400 cases for the 8 hour shift.
