Can you opt out of the union?

The Union is only good for the ones who don't want to work, but want a pay check. They are called United Food and Commercial WORKERS (UFCW) Union. They should be called United For the Careless and Weary (UFCW). Most people I have met that count on the Union know little about Food and Commercial and definitely aren't Workers. I just want out, because they do more damage that they do good. Kroger wants high ratings, wants customers to be satisfied, and wants to pass inspections, but none of this is going to happen as long as mangement can't do their jobs and make people do theirs. The Union gets in the way of this.

AMEN TO THAT!!

I work in a 'RIGHT TO WORK' state (in other words, anyone has their right to work without being forced to join a union) ..........Indiana.  Legislation passed by Conservatives/Republicans.   In the states that are more heavily controlled by Democrats/Liberals, (such as California) the state is NOT a "right to work state" so you are forced to join the union whether you want to  or not.

But anyway, to the OP, so if you live in a "Right to work" state, you can always opt out of joining the union.......that is your right.  But be prepared for some pushback from some of the Kroger employees who feel like everyone should automatically be in the union, and if you aren't you are almost like a "traitor' or something. They may not say it openly, but there might be a little subtle dislike on their part regarding your decision to  not join.

I guess I don't have a dog in this fight.  My store is starting to hold people accountable it seems.

I wish my store would start holding the right people accountable! They won't though. Because of the Union, the workers in my store feel they don't have to do anything and the store won't make them because they don't want to argue with the union or have lawsuits. I believe they need to just install cameras in the departments. If they did this, all they would have to do is look on the camera and see who's doing what and who's not. It's ridiculous!! Maybe the employees would start working, if they knew they were being watched.

It doesn't have the same meaning it used to, but that's called being a scab.  While the ethics of scabbing are debatable, its not really that shocking that people who are of the idea that management is prone to abusing a disorganized workforce would be annoyed with people not being part of the organized workforce.  And, "Right to Work" stipulates that a union must still fully protect scabs as they would members so while not paying dues the scab is still legally entitled to union representation.  It would be less controversial if the scab did not gain the protections of a contract they are not members of.

As for management not wishing to tangle with the union and their lawyers, thats a fallacy.  If management wanted to, its remarkably easily to have an iron clad case against any clerk.  It just takes some simple paperwork and record keeping that is already part of the duties of management.  If that clerk isn't punished, its because management doesn't think it is worth their time, not because they are afraid of the impotent UFCW
