Nasty Customer!

Just for me to vent: Grumpy old fart comes into my checklane with a cart full of stuff. I greet him and start scanning, and ask him how his day was. We have the new setup where the cashier unloads the cart, scans it, and sends it down the conveyor to a bagging area. Most customers are nice enough to bag for you when they see items starting to pile up, but some prefer not to which is totally understandable. I finish scanning everything and it is all piled up and the end of the conveyor, I hit total and wait for him to pay and I start bagging. He has a lot of stuff and he is not helping at all, and there is customers behind him in line since it is about 9:00 pm and I am the only checker on the night before memorial day. So I am trying to go quickly but I am never careless when I bag. It comes down to the last few items and there are six cans and a six pack of pop, and some hot dog buns. I stand the six cans up in the bag (anyone who has ever bagged knows this works beautifully as they conform to the shape of the bag and stay standing up) and put the buns on top of the cans (because unless this dumb **** puts the bag upside down there is no way these buns are getting squished). He goes "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU CANT PUT BREAD IN WITH CANS". I take the buns out in put them in another bag and don't say a word to him. Then he yells at me to double bag the cans and put the pop in the bag which is totally unnecessary as the plastic ring literally has a handle to carry it with. Then I wish him a good night. This grump obviously had a certain way he wanted his crap bagged so why didn't he just do it himself? He probably gets some sort of satisfaction from getting to tell other people how to do their job. Any other experiences like this? Why are some people so grumpy?

Not a cashier/bagger, but I know what you mean about grumpy customers. Some people just aren't happy unless they have something to complain about. I don't get it either.

Oh yea, we had a customer that had come into our new store shortly after we had moved in. She needed it for that day and clearly was very ticked off that we didn't have that great of a selection to begin with. Well once she found one, she told me this super long message to put on there. And as I wasn't that experienced with writing on cakes at the time. I asked someone else if they could write on there for me. And they were doing fine for a bit til they made a bit of a mistake. And had asked if there was another cake with the same decorations so they could re-do things. But unfortunately, we didn't have any more in that particular style, so I just got another one that was similar-ish mind you different color flowers and was a lighter icing than the fudge the customer had picked(I had even checked with the customer to be sure if that option would be okay before it got written on as well). Even tracked down a make it right sticker too. But dude, that chick was all kinds of pissed off. And kept saying she knew she should have gone somewhere else. And how unprofessional we were, etc. etc.

So in general I think she just came in with a nasty attitude and wanted something to fuss about in the first place.

My favorite curmudgeon was a man who bought firewood from the fuel center I work at, he arrived agitated, I was as nice as could be to him. I even asked how his day was, he said "LOUSY!" I helped him load the firewood in his car. No thank you or anything. I found out, he was in such a huff, he did not even bother to take his change. I smiled, sneaked the money into my pocket and said to myself after he left "my day just got much better."
