As a Lead/Department Head aren't you suppose to cover for those who call in
Permalink

I have been left to close the department by myself for the 6th or 7th time in the last couple months, because of call ins and others are too busy or too tired to show up or work longer. Isn't it the Lead/Department Heads job to replace that person so that they don't leave their team stranded? I'm one person and I'm always getting stuck doing the job of 3 people because first shift can't clean up after themselves and others can't make it in to work. I'm tired, I'm busy, I have better thing to do than to work later than close just to get their job and my job done. They need to pay me a 3 person salary if they are wanting me to do the job of 3 people.

Depends on your particular store's culture. There is no written rule that leads have to come in and cover for call ins. But they are expected to, only when there is a corporate walk or it is busy and there is literally nobody manning the department to help with production and customer requests, otherwise one person is all Kroger needs, even if it's just one clerk. Good luck, Kroger will tell you.

Ya know, one would think that would happen. But it never did in my dept. until one of my co-workers had to call in our DH cause she would have been by herself last week after I left(worked a 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. and our back up manager was on vacation, and the only two other peeps working with her was the cake decorator and the pastry chef. And in our dept. those two roles are rather static, and they don't really help with the sales floor or do much else but decorating type of stuff).

But yea, beyond that, I have never really seen my DH come in and cover for anybody. They'd rather have other employees doing that. Heck I guess I and another chick have accepted the call more times than not that they have dubbed us go to back ups to call in. But still, I think sometimes the DH should cover for an employee that calls off. Just so they are in touch with what is really going on in their dept. I mean I know we often have a ton of call offs in our Deli at times. But I think if the DH at times tries to cover for someone that is often calling off. Maybe they can see what the issues are first hand. And I don't know, maybe work on changing them maybe.

If department heads had to cover call-ins, they'd be working 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  If too many people call in or if the person calling in is a crucial worker, then the only thing the department head can do is call management and ask if they can call someone in or if someone can work over.  If the answer is no, there's nothing the department head can do.

Even if a department head wants the overtime, first the store management has to approve it. It's not always that simple....

I could work 70 hour weeks at times if that was the policy at my store. My store manager would never approve that much OT. Even a couple hours a week is hard to get.
