Like your shift says you're on Uscan, but they tell you to go open up at a register. And you're there for the entire shift, while other people run the Uscan instead of you.
My store just recently started using the "SCO Operator" descriptor on schedules printed at the store, it always just used to say "Cashier" even if you were closing.
My first shift under "SCO Operator" pretty much stayed there for the entire shift with the exception of maybe 30 mins on a regular register.
At my store, we always had this ONE guy whom has been employed for nearly 30 years with the company, run the SCO but recently, within the last year, managers have forced him to regular registers because the 20+ year veterans want to run self-checkout and complain about regular registers so my managers have capitulated to their whims.
I've been employed with them for 3 years and I had never seen this guy on a regular register until this last year.
Whoever runs self-checkout is pretty much up to the current circumstances at your store and whatever managers feel like doing.
As a supervisor, I watch quevison very closely even when i'm only UScan or cashier that day... if we get backed up, i usually hand UScan off to one of my friends working customer service, and I will get on a register until the rush is over.
I also like bagging and helping minors/new cashiers with issues so i'm kind of all over the place, plus giving breaks out.
I was told the "lane assignment" sheets (where you plan where each employee coming in that day is going to be or do) are just suggestions; meaning they can schedule you for anything (their schedule is pretty kooky too.. I wouldn't read the labels. I can do everything in the front end, and often times my schedules look like this:
According to true self check rules: A cashier is not to operate a check stand. You are not even suppose to leave the self check area. You're basically tethered to the machines all your shift. You are not suppose to assist cashiers bag groceries, assist customers in a check stand, assist customers by walking to an item (you can verbally tell them where it is), you are technically not even suppose to stand at the podium, you are technically not allowed to use the remote control that operates it. Does anyone in the company follow these rules: NO! As self check attendant you can reinforce them. If not possible get corporate on their back.

Wait, not supposed to stand at the podium? Not supposed to use the remote control? How the **** am I supposed to help Uscan customers then? At our store, that handheld is glued to their hands while the help the other cashiers bag.
