Call In Always Denied By Store Manager
Permalink

My store manager is a real ******* of a lady. Everytime I call in, I always call in more than enough hours in advance like today I called 6 hours in advance. I told her that my nose is running flipping snot and she said just take sinus medicine. Really? IT'S A FOUR HOUR SHIFT JUST FIND SOMEONE TO COVER IT. Everytime I call her to tell her I'm calling in she says well do this or that. I talked to her about my grandmother's funeral 4 days in advance at work. Her response no I'm sorry you can't because it's memorial day weekend. It really pissed me off even more when I got to work because they had me doing absolutely **** but bagging, I missed a funeral just too bag flipping groceries. I've tried to call in 3 times this year and every time I spoke to her it was denied.

Then for the store itself it's trash it's dirty it's filthy. The employees there are very unprofessional, they are very rude to customers. I get sick of it really, I have started coming in late to work because I have to wait 4 or 5 hours sometimes for my 15 break. Last year and the beginning of this one, I covered so many shifts for people, when someone calls in I covered for them or stayed over a few or many hours. My supervisor let's the employees he's supervising run over him, he told one of the (cashiers/courtesy clerks/dairy clerk) to let me out for break and the clerk said no I rather bag. My supervisor was standing there arguing with him for 15 **** he could of just let me out for break. It's always something wrong in the meat department I've probably did more than 100 price overrides this past month, do to them not having correct sign or tag by the product.

The moral of the story is the store needs to be fixed or they can suck anybody's dick.

I don't know if this is enough to contact HR. IF you are going to call in sick, you don't have to give details just say you are sick, or say you have see something contagious, or food poisoning or something. If you call off for  runny nose of course the store manager will not see that as serious. But what gets me is how employees miss important life events like funerals, for a low wage, unskilled labor job like Kroger. Even if you get written up, at least it was for a real reason like, saying your last goodbyes. Kroger won't die and fall off the face of the Earth if an employee goes to a funeral. People should look at their Union contract, about things like that, it discussed how tskig off for a funeral should work.

It's their training to say they need you to come in and to take something over the counter. If they simply just said OK they would have call ins everyday. Let them know you can't make it in. You are sick and that you'll be contacting the Union because you've given enough advance notice.

Read your Handbook and see what the Union Contact states about call in/off. I would tell you to call in 30mins to 1 hours before the time frame that is required for a call off. When you call in simple state your feeling sick and are unable to work today, do not give details or tell them your going to the doctor. Our Union Contact does not require a doctors note of give deal, your required to only call 2 hours before your scheduled ****! If you call off continuously they could get you on calling off excessively..

Sounds like you call in a lot. I have worked there for 4 years and never called in once. Even if I get sick I still show up for work. Did you really call in because your nose was running a little? Sorry but thats not a good enough reason to call in. Your grandmother passing is a good reason though and is backed up by grievance. You should have just went to the funeral anyway. And if they said anything about it, then call your union rep and tell them about it. Because grievance is something they have to excuse you for. But all this other crap is just whiny baby bull ****. Be a man and grow the **** up. If you don't really need this job then quit. Let someone who actually needs it work instead. I'm sick of these lazy people Kroger keeps hiring. Also, your'e a courtesy clerk. So don't expect to receive the same level of respect as the other employees. Sorry but thats just the way it is at Kroger. Courtesy clerks are the pawns of the chess game here. You are the first line of defense and can be easily replaced. Sorry not sorry. Thats the truth. and that is all I will give you.

EDIT: To be fair, I am not trying to be mean. I am just being honest. Some may not agree with what I say but I believe honesty is the best policy because life is too short to play games and beat around the bush. Be upfront and honest with everyone and yourself.

I have to agree a little bit. You're grandmother's passing is one thing... You should have fought for your bereavement pay. But calling off because you have a runny nose??? I mean come on... This is exactly the reason why many cc's aren't respected. Whiners give the good ones a bad name.

OP said they had to do price overrides, and a worker refused to relieve them because they'd "rather bag" so it sounds like they're a cashier.

A courtesy clerk can't override prices obviously.

I'll agree that a runny nose doesn't sound like a valid reason to call out, but speaking as a cashier who didn't call out at all this year and worked through "allergy season", no matter how far you avert your sneezing and coughing face away from the customer, and their food, and apply hand santizer afterwards; they STILL glare at you as if you just gave them Ebola right on the spot.

Or you have to hear "You look terrible, you shouldn't have come to work!" 97 times a day.

Because f##k me for wanting to pay my rent, utilities and eat I guess?

So yeah, that gets old.

I don't think calling out 3 times a year is excessive. My first year of Kroger I called out 5 times, but it was only when I was in crippling pain and lost my voice.

Prior to that I had another job for 27 months, and only called out ONCE...I didn't have to work with so many gross people so my immune system needed time to adjust.

But I will add that "coming in late to work for revenge" is bad form and will only perpetuate the issues of you not recieving your breaks on time, and management never giving you a break because they'll see you as a slacker.

I have not read all the replies so not sure if this is repeating. Never call in for a runny nose. If I had to stay over because someone called in because their nose was running I would be pissed. Like someone else said use a different excuse. Now as for the funeral they did you wrong and it may be illegal what they did. You need to check the policy in your handbook. Atlanta Division says

In case of a death in the immediate family of an associate, the associate will be paid for a reasonable period of absence. For more specific details regarding coverage and time off see Store Management. I guess in your case you did and they denied it. You should have contacted someone higher up.

Yes. I have worked on the front end for a whole day plenty. Besides those days, every day I get called to the front repeatedly and I work in produce. I get called up front because of people like you who call in over every little thing. I still manage to get all of my work done AND check up front every 20 mins AND help floral customers throughout my whole shift. Also, I am always by myself when I work so I have no one helping me. I'm not complaining about it. Honestly, I get a lot more done when I don't have someone there to babysit. For your information, I do read, and that is saying a lot considering the way you write is a little hard to understand. Speaking of which, that is pretty hypocritical seeing how you didn't read my disclaimer at the end. You know, the one where I said I wasn't trying to be mean and that I was only being honest. Do you want me to lie or do you want real answers? Because if it's the former, then don't waste our time or yours with asking questions you don't want real answers to.

Also, please learn how to use a forum properly. Do not spam the pages with constant replies with quotes forcing the other users to scroll unnecessarily.

I never did ask a question, I simply stated what happened to me. As I said before, "Do you even read ?"disbelief. If I never asked a question did I even need your answer to begin with. Now, I did have a poll at top of my post which stated "Should I contact Hr?" which also didn't require an answer it required a vote.

You Kroger people take the job too serious if you died and fell from the face of this earth. Do you think corporate would give a **** nooooo, they don't even know who you are and don't care either. Just so head over hills for a store that doesn't care about you is not the goal for me.

The forum is not yours it doesn't affect anything, if a person chooses to read everything that is his or her choice, now do me a favor **** off will ya ?

Calm your tits. Look, it doesn't matter where you work, corporate is not going to care about you. So why concern yourself with that? The only thing that matters is that this is a job and it pays money. It can be a good opportunity for some, not so much for others. If you don't like it, you can get out and go work for another company that doesn't give a **** about you either. I can tell you don't have any bills or responsibilities. You probably live with your parents because your self entitlement really shines here. I hope for you that one day you will grow up and have to get out on your own and see how life really is.
