Personal Holidays Question
Permalink

So was just told or more less asked by my DH Monday, if I had scheduled or put in for my personal days off(I get 2 as I got full time later in the year). Which, I didn't even know about these days and that by a certain point in time that you had to take them. So now, I have to cram them in before November 15th.

But my question is, does any one know why exactly there is the cut off in regards to taking the first 3 by the 31st of July and the last 2 by November 15th? And is it possible to use one beyond either of those points in time? As I don't really have anything I could use a personal day for right now or in November. But in Dec. I do(to which, I did talk to our dept. scheduler and she told me to speak to our DH about it, when next I work. Which, I'm crossing my fingers, that he will be amendable to it. But I doubt it, as the day I'd want it for is a Sunday. And he's not a big fan of folks getting out of working Sundays unless they REALLY need to).

Depends. When was your hiring date?
It sounds kind of like the loop hole where the fiscal year doesn't line up with the actual year, therefore you get an extra week of vacation every year that you get an upgrade. I got hired late in the year so I get this too. My ASP said if you got hired within the last 3 months of the year, every time you get an additional vacation week upgrade, you get a bonus one to make up for the previous year.
Example:
After your first year you get 1 week of vacation per year.
After 3 years, you get 2 weeks of vacation per year.
etc.
But in my case,
After my first year, I get 1 week of vacation per year + 1 week of vacation (2 weeks)
after that, it goes back to 1 week per year.
After 3 years, I get 2 weeks of vacation per year + 1 week of vacation (3 weeks)
after that, it goes back to 2 weeks per year til the next upgrade in vacation weeks.
But with these "bonus" weeks, you have to take them by the end of January or February or you lose them, Then the normal weeks you get, you can take whenever during the rest of that year.

No kidding?! O_O That sounds pretty awesome actually. And I was hired in August on the 28th. So already had my 1 year anniversary and one week vacay scheduled(albeit they had me switch it to a week earlier, because I had gotten full-time, and that would mean too many full-time to part-timers being out of the dept. at one time or something like that. And with one of them being my DH, they couldn't have that).

You get two personal holidays after just one year? Lucky you... I've been with Kroger for 6+ years and I'm full time too, but I only get one personal holiday and I believe I'll just finally get a second after being there for seven years. Even though you gotta cram them in before November 15th, I'm still jealous.

But, if you never, or close to never, get a Sunday off, then a reasonable person would say you've earned one off and should get it, but this is Kroger we're talking about and very few things or people come across as "reasonable". Doesn't hurt to try... or if it helps, stretch the truth a little...

I thought getting 5 was standard though. As I've often seen for some people taking off a full week just about with nothing but personal days. Not sure if they were all the holiday thingies or not. But even the pastry chef was saying that technically and I guess pending on how it's scheduled you can get 5 "vacations" a year or something like that. Which still confuses me.

And just checked my calendar, I haven't had a Sunday off since July 16th. So yea, a REASONABLE person would think they could spare me for that day. But again I highly doubt my DH would. As they would need someone to close bakery as two of my co-workers, are college students that chose those days off not to work do to school. Even though one of them has taken off the semester and not even in school....and could be closing...(words out of her mouth to me).

To be honest though, this is my plan B option. Plan A was requesting it off anyway and C is seeing if someone would be willing to switch hours with me the closer we get to that date. Will be back to update things as we go along.

If you are in the Columbus division it is up to management if you can take them after the November 15th cut off. But in my experience they usually let you. I had to actually take one last year the last week of December and they had to get permission from HR because it would roll over onto my January paycheck. RIght now I still have 2 personals to take and a vacation. I'm not really sure when I can take them. We have been baking all of our breads at another store the last 3 months with our store under construction and the new bakery is supposed to reopen the first week of November and since I am a back up I have to be there for that.

Update:

Talked to DH about it, and he was adamant about me using my second holiday day before the 15th. And that I should just request the 17th off as per usual(again which I've already done). But I'm for sure going to keep an eye out for the closer we get to that date in time. Just in case I may need to switch hours with somebody.

And yea, I am in the Columbus Division, anonymous poster. But frankly I don't think my getting that day off or even using one of my personal days is such a big concern to take to management. I mean it's not like I need to take it off to see an ailing family member or something. So I'd hate to bug them about something that is kind of trivial in the bigger scheme of things. Thanks for the suggestion though.

P.S. how is the new store going? Things any better with transporting your doughs and so forth?

Things are going okay baking in the other store. I just hate working the 8pm-4am shift. Transporting the product back to my store has gotten easier. But now I have to depend in the DH and backup at the store we are baking at to order all the doughs in. Needless to say, the DH has been on vacation this week and I have not been able to get everything in that I need. I have had to order a bunch of stuff at my store and bring it in with me. Only 4 more weeks to go though.

Yea, I figured the shift you had mentioned working would really be something else. Glad the weeks are winding down though and soon enough it will be over. As that situation you mentioned in regards to the DH and back up manager sounds like a typical Kroger headache.

Heck our freezer in the bakery is hot mess central again cause our back up is on her vacation the last couple of days. And between us getting in more seasonal stuff and them scratching the hell out of things. And then sending us extras of other stuff we don't need. As well as it being the first time our head baker has learned how to order stuff. And with the other senior lead having been off on her vacation. It has just turned our freezer into a danger zone. **** is stacked too high, toppling over. Just team too much in there and glad I don't do truck or close bakery too often. As it gets old having to try and wriggle through all those carts all the time and the others that don't really have to go along the back wall for anything, always yapping about it's not that hard to reach ****. Um, until you are doing it yourself, I personally do not care to hear it.
