So, I'm thinking about asking to work in Frozen. There's only two people that work in it, the head of course, and then my coworker will be working there sometimes too. Does frozen only have a department head? Do they not have a backup? I would love to change positions and make more money.
Frozen, Dairy, and MOST Drug GM departments do not have "official" backup positions. That other clerk in Frozen besides the backup most likely knows how to do all the tasks of the Frozen lead because when the Frozen lead goes on vacation it is up to that single other clerk to maintain department standards.

Frozen and dairy are actually part of the grocery department. They have leads, not department heads. There is no backup position. Of course your contract may state that if the lead goes on vacation, whoever takes over their duties gets lead pay. Then again, it might not.
No: it's a sub-department of Grocery, as are Dairy and Natural Foods. The leads (sub-department heads) are Level 4s in the Dallas-Local 1000 contract, and number twos (backups) are cheated out of any status at all, even though they need to do most everything the lead does.
Stand-alone departments--e.g., Bakery, Deli, Produce--have Level 5 department heads (about three-to-four dollars more an hour than Level 4), plus Assistant Department Head status for number twos which pays them top of scale, plus a dollar more an hour.
Here, bakery is it's own department, with a manager but we don't get an assistant, since actually bakery manager is on the same pay level as the assistant deli manager. Produce, meat, (and drug gm if the store is big enough) all get assistant department heads.
