Made to stay the night in the store due to snow...?

Recently, when it snowed, our store shut down early.

Made sense to me.

What I didnt know was that the people whom were at the store while it was snowing Im told were made to stay there... to do something called double time...

They DID have a hotel set up for people that requested it... but you had to request a room specifically... which they purposefully did not tell anyone about.

Atleast thats what I was told. I was off at the time.

I was ALSO told, and this is my main problem... that if your at the store while its snowing and they tell you you cant leave, your not allowed to leave..?

You HAVE to work as many hours as they need you for and have to clock out and stay until they give the okay or risk being fired...

Even if your within walking distance, you risk being fired if you refuse to hold yourself up in your store until they decide you can leave...

which I find pretty messed up.

As in my opinion it should be up to the person(s) after theyve done their shift whether they want to risk going home or not. Not saying itd be wise at all, but I just cant imagine being told that Im not allowed to leave and have to work as long as possibly needed...

Never heard of something like that before. I was told by the person its to make sure they can take care of the customers but who the hell would be shopping if its SO bad you cant leave the store?!

Not to mention, the kicker here... that you couldnt call out and the snow was not an excuse to call out...

but once youre there you cant leave cause yknow... its unsafe... cause of the snow...

Crazy.

I've never heard that.  That's crazy if it's true.  If you don't mind my asking, what region are you in?

Your managers are breaking all kinds of rules here.  They need to be reported and fired.  I especially find it disturbuing about the part highlighted in red where you say they wanted people to clock out but keep on working.

Legally they can't hold you hostage in the store against your will.  That's illegal.  You did have the free right to leave at any time.  You just need common sense for safety to get home.

It's similar to when they hold passengers on an airplane hostage due to not enough staff in the airport.  It's illegal.
