They Prefer People Who Call In Sick

I've worked in Produce for two years. I have never called in sick once, have always got someone to cover or excused absences if needed (they schedule me against my availability, and I go to college). I have never just "called in," and have always helped out when needed. Yesterday, I worked for 11 hours because someone called in.

That's just it, though... 

They give new people who call in more hours than they give me, and then they cry to me when someone decides they don't wanna show up (there's this girl who's notorious for it, and I always end up having to take her shifts one way or another).

She was even bragging that Saturday (the day she was scheduled to work) she was going to a "drag party."

My Produce manager and I struggled for about 4-5 hours alone before the next person came in. And the same thing happened Sunday, she was too hungover to come in.

She didn't even tell my manager she was going to a party, she lied and said she was sick. But why is she sick every weekend, and why do they still not give me hours? Why not just give me the hours she won't show up for?

If you have seniority over her, you could claim her schedule. Not sure about the details, but if she has more hours, then you could claim them. One other thing to check out is if she has opened availability. Because you say you have restricted. They usually give more hours to those with unrestricted availability.

This might sounds stupid, the Produce Manager.....I'm thinking could start scheduling her differently!

This is going to sting a little, so brace for that. ..... Your story and the whiny way you tell it suggest very strongly that your management team knows you're a crybaby victim they can walk all over. Don't focus on 'why do the call-offs get favored', work on standing up for yourself. You're not changing anything in that place. Best thing to do at this point is put all your energy into college----and get the HELL out of that place if you really need a job at all.

You made it look like all you did was copy my post so it took me a minute to realize you actually wrote something.

 

Obviously, I've tried being assertive and stern and that hasnt worked, hence the reason I'm here. If you don't want people to complain, don't join an employee forum.

Hi! Thats called performance punishment, and its the new Kroger way. The keep any dirtbag off the street to fill out hours and punish you for not doing enough, simple as that.
