What happens when customer doesn't take their cashback?

On the Uscan, I mean. Uscan lane has cash disabled, and there is a paper sign on it saying that it cannot give cashback. I've had a few customers order cashback and then that screen pops up "A cash machine error has occurred..." and then they see the paper sign saying that it's not giving cashback, and before I could even get to them, they're gone... They just left the store faster than I could blink my eye. They didn't understand that the machine had already taken the money from their account.

I'm sure in a few days when they login to their bank accounts and look at their transaction history, they're gonna see that they were charged $100 and something dollars and they're gonna flip their tops when they realized that was the day they ordered cashback from the self checkout and they only had $5 worth of groceries.

I mean, what happens when they call the store, or come to the store, and ask for their money after all those days have passed? Does Kroger give them their money? Is there an investigation that is done? I am curious.

If they're that absentminded, I'd hate to think how they keep track of the rest of their lives.  Anyway,  the u-scan will obviously show a large cash overage.  I'm sure if the customer brought back in their receipt, they could trace the cash down.  Some unscrupolous Kroger employee might deny that Kroger has the money, so you may have to speak up and say otherwise.

See that's the thing. They would not have any receipt to show. And that's because of the steps I have to follow when a customer orders cash back from a lane that cannot give cashback.

Normally, customer does the cashback on the pinpad, pinpad sends signal to the Uscan, Uscan sees that its cash is disabled and then shows the cash machine error screen, customer sees that screen, customer then flags me down, I come over, scan my barcode, print out a cash voucher (only after I print out the voucher does the customer's receipt print out), put the voucher in my attendant station till, give the customer their cashback from my till along with their receipt, customer walks away happy.

But in this special instance, the customer just up and leaves behind my back (usually while I'm helping someone else) before I could realize that they ordered cashback. I visually scan each Uscan every 10 to 30 seconds to see if customers need help, so the customer magically disappeared during that tiny window of time my attention didn't catch their screen. And since 90% of customers who go through Uscan never take their receipts, these customers just leave without a receipt... or their cashback...

I've forgot cash back of $20 and $40 or $60 twice before. Luckily I got the $40/$60 back. Can't remember the exact amount. The $20 was stolen by the customer after me though. Now I always make sure to get my cash. Gotta learn the hard way.

There was one time when a customer left their $100 cash back and I was the next one to use their lane and a random customer next to that self checkout lane looked over and started reaching for the money like WTF? Seriously, people are dumb. Had it not been a Kroger employee I think he would have successfully stolen the money.

Kroger's self check outs should have changed dispensed from eye level instead of being waist. That way it'll be less likely to forget.

I have forgotten $40 cas back, but the uscan attend at sptted it and I showed my receipt and got it back. I forgot $20 one time and got it back, and I bitched out the store manager for the lousy way they handled the issue.

I recently forgot cash back again and of course was told no one found it, but honestly I think the uscan attend found it, and would not be surprised if she kept it, she is not honest. But the issue is I may have a ton of my mind, but the cash does need to be dispensed higher, so it can easily be seen, and also there should be an alert noise, when you don't take the cash fast enough, like how the pinpads beep when the card is left in for too long.

Ours have that (Toshiba System 6). If you don't take your cash within 5 or so seconds, you hear a very loud DING DING DING followed by a slightly more aggressive tone from the female robot voice, "TAKE YOUR CHANGE!!!" Three or so more seconds after that, another DING DING DING and another reminder. Over and over till someone takes the cash.

Very few people have forgotten to take their change while I've been around. I can count them on my right hand. And when they did, that ding is something that always alerts me and I have caught them before they walked out the door and given them their cash.

Same with ours. Even as a bagger, I make note of the peeps leaving self check sometimes to ensure that if the alarm goes off, I can quickly start heading to the door to stop the custy while the Uscan attendant gets the change for them. I've even once ran (not running, fast walking) the change to a custy once who was in front of me on break, and they just left right before the machine dispensed it. So the attendant saw it and got a hold of them while I got the cash to them. Otherwise if that happens and the customer has left, a backup receipt of their order is printed right afterwards or after the next customers order from the robot, and that with the money goes into the attendant station.

I'd staple the amount to the voucher, and write "Forgotten" on it.  Does the vouch have the time it was printed on it?  If it doesn't, I'd write the time on it.
