Last-minute changes to my schedule
Permalink

Hi,

What would your reaction be (or should be) to your dept head that keeps making last-minute changes to your schedule, such as switching the days you have off (right before the day you have off, she suddenly says "I need your to work tommorow and take the next day off instead"  because someone else probably won't be able to come in because of an emergency situation.  At the same time, she has been very stingy with yet another employee's schedule ( in our dept)  for this same week, and wasn't keen on asking them if they could/would fill in for that employee that needed to be off.   It is getting a little irritating because I can't seem to count on a day "off' really being "off"  after all. Hard to plan anything (or take a much-needed rest after several days of "bad' scheduling in which I didn't get enough recuperation time in between those days'work shifts).

Usually when the schedule is up and finalized they can NOT change it WITHOUT YOUR approval. Can't you just say "already made plans that I Can't (wont) change?

Because a co-worker may not come in tomorrow is NOT a good enough excuse. If it were me, I'd come in if it were a bona fide emergency, but if it kept happening with the same.pwrson, I'd start saying No.

Speak with your Union Representative if you are union.

If you are not a union store, then you may not have any recourse.

Under most contracts, the schedule is supposed to be posted by Saturday at noon.  No changes are supposed to be made after noon unless the manager and the employee agree to it.

I make sure all my changes are done by Friday.  I will even give the person a copy of the changes to make sure they are aware of them.

Occasionally, I will ask a person to switch shifts at the last minute but I don't force them to.  That is their choice.

Yep, you can start saying this. There's a guy in my department who NEVER works anything other than what the schedule is because "he made plans", which is a lie 9/10 times. But I just turn my head and go the other way since there's nothing I can do to force him to work another day, stay longer, etc. I just keep that in mind whenever he might want a specific day off or if I need him out of the department. Since he can't help me, I won't help him.

I usually help out or stay later if I could. However if they started taking advantage is when I'd start saying No. Also, I was taught by my parents to help if able. (Which I do) because supervisors and managers remember favors you do. And will (unless they are dicks) repay the favor by giving you a " blocked" day off or other coveted days you may need. One hand washes the other.

Just take it like a man and just show up that next day. Whatever trite BS you have going on your day off (browsing Facebook all day, Netflix, Youtube, everything besides going outside) can just wait until the next day. Put yourself in that manager's shoes and simply just be a team player.

Last minute schedule changes happen . Just take it with a grain of rice.

Talk to your manager before you get the union or anybody else involved. Are you on good terms with your manager? Is he asking you to change your schedule as a favor? Does he return the favor when you ask for one?

If you are on friendly terms and if you can help by switching your day off, then do it. Then when you need to change YOUR schedule, he/she will also help. At least that's how it is in my department. If someone, who I know will do the same for me, I will do anything I can to change my day or time to whatever they need. I like my coworkers, and I know who will help me and who will not. I act accordingly.

Just tell them NO, your only required to work your scheduled shifts that are posted. I would say be flexible to a points, but your Department Head needs to establish people need to be more responsible and request off. Everything in a department stems off what the Department Head is allowing, some items are easier to control, but staffing and people not being responsible are hard to manage at times.

. . . keeps making last-minute changes to your schedule, such as switching the days you have off (right before the day you have off, she suddenly says "I need your to work tommorow and take the next day off instead"  . . .   At the same time, she has been very stingy with yet another employee's schedule ( in our dept)  for this same week, and wasn't keen on asking them if they could/would fill in for that employee that needed to be off.

That's discrimination, isn't it?

Our contract has rules about scheduling--posted noon Friday; finalized for full-timers by noon Saturday; 24-hour notice if a part-timer's schedule has to be changed--and yours likely does, too.

Enforce the rules.

A grievance can't be filed on a non-management associate, but you can use the process to hold the store director accountable for what violations he or she allows by associates, including your department head.
