A Mentor
Permalink

So Ive been working at the same store for two years.

An assistant manager asks if Im willing to be mentored by someone who used to be a store manager.

She said I would be asking my mentor for any questions, and that he would guide me in the right direction. She also gave me a company e-mail and said I would continue being guided by him and contacting him.

When I askedwhat the purpose of this was, she was vague. Her only answers were:

We feel that (mentors name) will help you draw out your potential. You have so much potential here, and by working with (mentor), we can help you be the best you can be. Its not a bad thing at all, its a very good thing!

Has anyone experienced this, and could you give me more insight about it?

    How should I proceed, then?

ummmm, this sounds more like someone who wants to sleep with you or some other favor. Management promos don't happen like this. Sounds fishy

I highly doubt thats it. She has never sexually harassed anyone and cares too much about her job to do so.

As someone that was approached similarly last year, I say go for it. Youll learn a lot but nothing is promised. I work in a stacked district where the only openings for co-managers have been because of death.

Maybe they want you to be MOD? Thats fun. You get a sense of responsibility but you also just because a slave for management. They give you a list a mile long each night but also expect you to take care of the store while theyre gone. You quickly find that that people in their 50-60s are still children. Hope things work out for you.

This sounds much more likely. When I worked in retail I was once similarly approached and put in charge of the receiving warehouse. Like Jhin described, I quickly found myself overwhelmed with honey-do and endless go-fer lists----plus the crew back there I was 'in charge of' knew I wasn't real management and refused to do anything I needed. For which I was blamed.

Things to consider..
