i hear it starts after 5 years of service

Five years in the Southwest Division. Don't know if it's the same in other divisions, though.

10 years in So.Cal. I retired 2 years ago after 42 years and have a pension of $2400 month

It depends on your location and your contract. 6 years in IL. and have to be at least years age of 60 to retire on it!

House is paid for

No kids

Next year I get $1800 in Social security

That is $40,000 a year

I am 61 yrs old

$500,000 in my Kroger 401k

$400,000 in my IRA

$150,000 cash

Full medical through the union for $260 a month

 That's $600 a week...that's more than i make as a department head (without OT)... it's doable if you don't spend outside your means confuse

edit: Just realized you meant in Cali... so i guess there would be a little more cost in there

The cost of living here in L.A. is only high in real estate. I'm single and live in a 1 bedroom condo. I'm very happy!

 WHHAAATTT?????   Maybe you are being sarcastic, but its more than just "real estate"!! Is gasoline classed as real estate????  EVERYTHING is higher in CA!
